I don’t think I liked any of the leads on Succession, but it was still a good watch. I think that’s a good case study for a show with interesting stories but unlikeable characters.

That's a pretty good one.

I've been randomly doing a True Blood rewatch and Bill probably fits that for me. He's in love with Sookie, but he's definitely this weirdly possessive wet blanket. Team Eric til I die.

You made me think of this article by Bill Simmons from 2002 - The Holy Trinity of the Karate Kid

that was a really funny read, and a delightful throwback to the internet humor of the early 00s.

i remember similar longform deep dives from that era (on a different site that i have long since lost in the depths of the internet) on Jaws: The Revenge and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace. wish i could find those.

Are we just naming anti-heroes? That's like every character now.

William Munny doesn't exactly have the purest of motives.

He doesn't??

His kids are relying on him to turn the pig farm around and he's at whit's end. He's approached by the Kid to fulfill a bounty. He says no, but changes his mind after realizing he's really got no other choice. He's not happy about any of this, and takes no pleasure from it from beginning to end.

Hell, Little Bill gets more of a rise out of the shite he does.

No, Munny did what he did out of necessity only, to feed his kids. Nothing else. That's pretty pure.

He's a hired killer.

I don't remember the 10 Commandments having the "well, unless your pig farm is failing and kids are hungry" qualifiers. I'm not saying the cow hands didn't deserve it. But Munny was no angel.

Yes, it’s not justice, he’s being paid to murder someone. Thats the whole point of the movie, gunfighters aren’t glamorous or heroic, they’re violent and evil men. Munny’s confession to the kid says it all and he did change his life to the point of needing to get wasted and have Ned be murdered to fully embody what he once was. To say Munny is pure is missing the entire point of Unforgiven.

The question isn't of his actions, it's of his motives. (your words)

His motives were to save his family and his farm.

The question of his actions are for a different thread.

The HBO movie "Conspiracy." Everyone in it is abhorrent, but the film should be required viewing in high school as a lesson about bureaucracy.

I vehemently disagree with Hannibal Lecter in Silence of the Lambs.
