Supernatural’s ratings were actually excellent by CW standards.
Not to mention they had an insanely loyal audience. You could pencil in x amount of viewers at a minimum for that show week after week.

without looking... shameless?
Shameless at best barely had half the average viewers per episode on a season as Blackish, so yeah it wasn't close.

Towards the end of s3 they started doing “very special episodes” about the cops being evil and white people just being racist monsters.
Yep, that's about where I bowed out as well (although I was never a really dedicated viewer).
Hollywood has moved away from shows which ride the line and allow viewers to make their own decisions to fully embracing the desire to beat viewers over the head with the views of the identity politics crowd. I just started S4 of Star Trek: Discovery and barely made it through episode 2 before the constant woke pandering made me shut it off.

I’ve got no clue where you got these #’s or what they represent.
How do you have a knowledge of tv, but zero knowledge of how ratings work? The more viewers, the lower the rank. It's literally the same principal that we use for every ranking ever done. Biggest stadium? Who fits the most people? Biggest movie? Which one has been seen by the most people? etc, etc, etc.
MM - Millions of people
Yes, Dear averaged 13 million viewers for the first 3 seasons, placing it within the top 25, much less the top 50.
According to Jim is extremely close to fitting, as it onyl had one season ranked in the to 50 in viewership, it was #47 that year.
Mike & Molly averaged over 10M viewers over its run, only it's 6th and final season was at #51 (Which is one season too few btw)
The Drew Carey Show was ranked #15-#18 for seasons 2-4.
Last Man Standing almost fits, but I'm pretty sure cancel culture came for Tim Allen in like 2016 and that gave the ratings a boost. I don't remember exactly what happened, but it was something akin to that.

The Office only had one season out of nine in the top 50. Parks and Rec only had one in the top 100.
I think those did really well with the 18-40 demo though

It’s a concept called narrowcasting.
The idea is that there is no “mass media” anymore. There are no true “water cooler” shows people watch.
The audience had become more granulized, appealing to very niche interests.
The key thing now is to focus advertisements at specific demographics that are most likely to buy specific products.
Hence, the reason if you have Hulu with ads, it will occasionally ask you what ads most appeal to you (cars, medicines, etc.)

Has a TV sitcom ever lasted more than 7 seasons never finishing ranked in the Top 50?
Not to defend the show (because I've never watched it) but with the proliferation of cable shows and channels this probably wasn't even possible 30 or 40 years ago.
Things are much different than they used to be, no doubt.
I'm over 50 now. I used to watch Cheers religiously. Watched Friends a lot. Hell, I grew up with the ABC combo of Happy Days/Three's Company, etc.
The last NETWORK show of any genre that I watched regularly was NCIS, and that still had Dinozzo and Ziva on it.
I don't even know what's on network now. I keep Cox for the ESPN access, but otherwise I'm streaming on the Firestick, and it's something on Disney+, Prime, or HBOMax.
And as I said, I'm old and probably behind the curve on these things.

Ah, remember the Great Rural Purge, when shows like Mayberry RFD and The Virginian got cancelled even though they were in the top 20?

quote:Yeah - there just are no monoculture shows or movies anymore. I'd say GoT came the closest in recent years for shows. Marvel Endgame seemed to be the most widespread cultural event in 20 years - the exception that proves the rule.

Seems like I read somewhere recently where The Simpsons has never been ranked higher than 30 or 40.

It may have been one of my comments in a recent thread. It cracked the top 30 in 1990 and again in 1992, but that was it.
Edit: To be fair, The Simpsons were an early victim of “time shifting.” I know A LOT of people who watched it for those first 8 golden seasons. But I also knew a lot of people who watched it via recorded tapes that got passed around.

That was a great show though. Had a loyal small following.

The Simpsons was in the top 10 a few times and beat out Cosby after season 3.

Same for me. I liked Anthony Anderson before the show. Haven’t watched in years.
Watched probably half of season 1. Have rarely seen an episode sense. The funniest one I can remember was when his son dropped the n-bomb in the talent show.

If you’re referring to weekly ratings, I’m sure you’re right. I just don’t have that data at my fingertips right now.
But when I reviewed the season-by-season ratings, it didn’t look like The Simpsons ever placed higher than #20 for a given year.
