What's astonishing about the film is its hypnotic seamlessness - the way that the director, Alfonso Cuarón, using special effects (and 3D) with a nearly poetic simplicity and command, places us right up there in space along with the people on screen. Entertainment Weekly

I was going to start a thread about this.

That is crazy.

I see the comparisons to 2001: A space Odyssey but you can't get 98% of critics to agree that 2001 is a great a movie.

A 98% average is really but to me the 9.0 average is the most surprising. Can't wait to go see it even though I really dislike Bullock.

Alfonso Cuaron. Emmanuel Lubezki. That should be enough said.

But you COULD take the word of the people that have actually seen it. And then you could go see it and judge for yourself.

Anyone who was doubting whether this was going to be good just doesn't know that much about filmmakers.

Maybe they paid the critics off

Or maybe it's a pretty good movie

It looks terrible. The trailer isn't even remotely interesting to me.

You should definitely not go see it then. You've seen all that you need to make up your mind.

Well my husband wants to see it, so I suppose I'll watch it. And I'm sure it will be good, but the trailer still didn't do anything to grab me.

So is this one you should see in 3D? I've heard the space shots are gorgeous and one review quote said something like the film was made for 3D. I agree with many that the trailer/premise just don't do it for me, but the buzz is pulling me in.

With the exception of Batman & Robin, everything Clooney does is rated highly. Being ultra liberal helps, I'm sure, but his work has been universally praised. But 98% is ridiculously high.

Oh, I agree. It received way too much hype, especially for how dull and simple the plot was. I expect much of the same from Gravity, cornball plot, amazing CGI.

It just amazes me that some people will be completely unaware of this formula and actually go see this movie for the plot only to be severely disappointed. Those same people will bitch and moan about how "terrible" the movie was and then start multiple threads regarding their opinion and we will all have the pleasure of sifting through them on a daily basis.

I've heard this opinion from several sources.

It's apparently very "different", yet it works at a high level

Even good actors/filmmakers make bad movies.
And I'm not saying this is going to be it, I'm simply saying the trailer is boring. It didn't grab me and make me want to see the film.
They float off into space, you usually don't come back from that.
