My memory may serve me wrong but iirc the reason for the wall originally was to keep the WW out. So if everything is building up to battle with the WW I would assume the wall is coming down so the W can come down to attack Westeros which means Jaime or no one willbe taking the Black since the wall is gone and the only reason to take the Black to defend the fall from the WW. Just saying

We see Meryn extensively after that fight. No matter what happened there it is extremely unlikely Syrio killed a Kingsguard with a wooden sword, even Ser Meryn fricking Trant.

yeah, so guess who is functionally the master at arms of winterfell?
ETA: and if I had to take a guess it's Lord Royce since Sansa had him crawling up the armorer's arse about not covering chest plates with leather last episode.
ETA: and if she were master of arms she'd be busy training every man, woman, and child for battle as King Jon commanded. But she just continues to work with Pod (not that it appears to be helping).

1.) he still kicked fricking arse. That's the point.
2.) if Arya and Brienne were actually fighting Arya would be dead. She lost whenever Brienne actually started fighting.

i mean part of what Brienne/pod show is how much work, actual practice, it takes to get good at that stuff. it was also reference in season 1 when Renly and Loris were shaving Renly's chest hair off. Arya has lived far too solitarily to have any sort of real practice in fighting
it takes YEARS of intense, daily training to get to the level of a Brienne

Again being a man conveys a huge amount of muscle that 99.9% of women just don't carry. Brienne is the .1% in the books and her size is repeatedly remarked upon.

Arya's abilities are in assassinating people, not swordplay. that's the problem with how the framed that scene
it was pretty much her entire story in one fight...she could've told sansa and Brienne and littlefinger, but that would be boring for us because we already know...so they did something cool with it.
yes, IRL Brienne would knock that sword out of her hands. who cares? also, Brienne is going soft on her. she is dismissive of arya until arya is making her look bad and then she knocks arya on her arse.

The guard scene was the only "goofy" scene so I have no idea what you are talking about
You know what that scene referred back to the scene when Arya was back at KL trying to get back in after escaping through the opening Tyrion made (wow, mind-blown).

I also agree the show has seemed rush but I think the outcome that they are building will be worth it. Plus I am just glad we starting to get to follow one story line with all the characters in the same story line. The past few seasons had many wasted episodes with side story lines and bouncing from one character to another.

Rapiers beat broadswords when it comes to 1 on 1 combat. We're talking about a 2 ft length of fishing rod vs a 3 ft 2x4, and first good contact wins. You're not chopping anyone's head off with Needle, but you can skewer them and/or slice up their throat.
Nope.

I'm gonna guess that the magical assasins that take people's faces and pray to death probably can train someone a little better/faster than the master at arms in Tarth
Also SHE LOST TO BRIENNE

i think this is the primary issue. what's the point of cutting the final 2 seasons if your'e just going to rush through both?
Almost certainly budgetary issues. The final two seasons were going to be butt expensive, what with all the White Walkers, dragons, direwolves, etc. that will need to be CG. I get the feeling that HBO wasn't going to pony up to have the characters in every episode, but the way the story is laid out, you're getting WW or dragons in pretty much every episode. I figure HBO told Benioff and Weiss what their final budge would be. Given that and their average cost per episode with all the CG that would be required, they figured out that they get an abbreviated season and still tell the story.
Best I can figure.

Their filming time also limited now due to the need for snow in so many areas.

Clearly she's been taught how to fight. She's more than an assasin and that was the point of that scene. She can kick some fricking arse
All kidding aside, her persona is just a little weird to me now. I get that she's all jaded and has killed a lot of people, but she seems to have gone a bit nuts.
Also, I get the feeling that the producers struggle to keep Maisie from chunking out. Something tells me that she's going to put on the pounds when this show is over.

Not yet, but that Ash/Snow in the throne room at KL could be a big part of the reason.

Well, I am assuming that all of season 8 will be in heavy snow conditions except for maybe an epilogue in the last episode
