Rob was depicted as much more competent as a commander in the books I think. He reeled off a string of victories that gave Stark fans hope. And that was crushed in the RW. I don't think they were able to convey that as well in the show.

Highly doubt it. They just need to build it up over the course of Season 4. Cat rising that suddenly will just serve as a way to make the non-readers less shocked about the Red Wedding. They need a long time away from Cat in order to truly get the full feel of that.

If they wait too long most of the nonreaders will have no idea who she is, kind of like Rickon.

I'll give the Hodors at least that much benefit of the doubt. It's not like viewers forgot who people were in Lost.

I certainly don't think they'd forget about Catelyn since she's a main character.

Seasons 1 and 2 ended with some type of shocking scene

1. Dragons on naked Dany
2. Other leading an army towards the wall

Both were the first major introductions to either supernatural event. I fully expect S3 to end on a similar note.

I think it also ends with warged Arya pulling UnCat out of the river, as they have really waited to show any first person warging thus far in the show. The last scene will be Nymera sniffing around the river and then cutting away when UnCat opens her eyes.

I think uncat is the most likely cliffhanger ending. Second would probably be Joffrey choking on wine at the PW.

Robb stands for House Stark. The TV show has basically made House Stark = good. Everyone else = bad. People will be upset.

I'm trying to remember the last episodes of season 1 and season 2 to get an idea for how they handle them. Seems like they use them almost as an epilogue to kind of regroup from the big events that occur in week 9 of each season. And then end on a cliffhanger of some sort.

Season 1 -
Winterfell - Stark boys find out Ned is dead.
Riverlands - Jaime admits Catelyn he threw Bran out the window, Tyrion sent by Tywin to KL
KL - Arya starts for the wall
Wall - Jon leaves for trip on the other side of the wall
Essos - Dany hatches dragons

Season 2 -
KL - Aftermath of Blackwater
Dragonstone - Stannis sees stuff in flames
Westerlands - Robb reveals Talisa to Cat, Brienne and Jaime travel
Winterfell - Theon loses, Bran/Rickon and co. depart for north
Harrenhal - "Valar Morghulis"
Essos - Dany wrecks the House of the Undying
Wall - Jon kills Halfhand, three horn blows for Others

So its been one really big event per episode(its Dany both times) and winding down a storyline/starting another for pretty much everyone else. I just don't think Dany taking Yunkai is anywhere near as exciting as birthing dragons or the Undying scene; I'm sticking with the PW as the big event.

I just don't see how they can have Robb and Balon die and not finish things off with Joffrey. After the burning leaches scene everyone will know that the third death is coming.

I'm still going with Littlefinger putting Sansa onto his ship.

Episode 9 we get red wedding, Queenscrown with Jon and Bran complete with Hodor warging.sam and coldhands, Daario and Jorah go sewer diving in Yunkai. Arya hound arrive at Twins

Wasn't the sewer diving at Meereen? Yunkai released its slaves after the sellswords turned, so Dany didn't actually attack the city.

well they have combined both cities in the HBO series so they could potentially co through the sewers.

pretty sure they are combining the two, dany and daario are going over strategy in the preview and I'dassume it's to enter the city through the sewers

Are you serious? That makes no sense. I thought Dany would actually have something to do all next season.

Great breakdown. Thanks for putting that together.

In addition to the one big event and winding down elements, I think there may be just a glimmer of hope put forward in each 10th episode. It would make sense to get people to turn back in.

1st season - Arya leaving for the Wall, Danny's dragons hatching and even Jon leaving on the great ranging all kind of fit into things that give some hope. (Of course that ranging didn't really go very well so far).

2nd season - Bran and Rickon going North, Danny wrecking the house of the undying and Valar Morghulils (I'm assuming that's Arya's giving names to be bumped off or getting the coin).

None of these are great victories for the "good guys" or fan favorites (I don't think the series is doing quite as great a job as the books in painting different sides with moral ambiguity - there are definite favorites that develop among viewers). But they offer some small hope, even if it's only narrowly escaping what seems like certain death or captivity for uncertain journeys.
