Goodfellas vs. Once Upon a time in America

Which movie do you like better? The flashback scenes to Noodles' childhood in Once Upon a Time in America was absolute magic and better than anything in Goodfellas IMO. The scenes with the older Noodles were really good too. But I wasn't keen on the plot after Noodles got out of jail. So it was definitely a mixed bag. Goodfellas was a more consistent film. It was great from beginning to end but there weren't any moments which exhilarated me like there were in Once Upon a Time in America. So I personally like Once Upon a Time in America more than Goodfellas but Goodfellas was probably the better overall film. What do you guys think?

I like Once Upon A Time but I imagine parts of it put the average movie goer to sleep whereas Goodfellas moves at a pretty brisk pace for the entire movie.
I think overall, I like Goodfellas more.
I watched the unbutchered print of Once Upon A Time a few months back online. I enjoyed it but just not nearly as much as Goodfellas.

I have never had a chance to see "Once Upon a Time" but really want to. IMO "Goodfellas" was better than "The Godfather." Yes, I said it.
BTW, Ray Liotta's narration sequences in Goodfellas were watched over and over by Shawshank Redemption Director Frank Darabont in preparation for finding a good narrator for Shawshank - which of course he found in Morgan Freeman who arguably turned in the best narration in movie history.

Once Upon a Time in America is one of the finest films I have ever seen. It does drag on, and it is overambitious at times, but I can't hold that against Sergio Leone. It's almost like the Deer Hunter of mafia films.
Goodfellas definitely has the "rewatchability" factor and I love watching it (hell, I watched it on some channel last night), but Once Upon a Time is better.

Just looked at this on IMDB and it has the running time at 229 minutes. Is that accurate? Long arse movie if so.

The original is about 4 hours. The original release was butchered and re-edited into nonsense.

IMO "Goodfellas" was better than "The Godfather."

Yeah, I have only watched the original version, and it is right under four hours. It was Sergio Leone's last film and took him a while to make. He definitely went out with a bang.

THANK YOU!!!!!! Believe me I love Scorsese, De Niro, Pesci, etc. but Goodfellas was nothing special imo. To even compare the quality to The Godfather is a complete joke. The style in Goodfellas is identical to Casino but I thought Casino was a better movie, overall.

I think it's apples and oranges here. One depicts the period near the turn of the century where organized crime began in America (OUTIA) and the other, following a 1970s mafia group's rise and fall (Goodfellas).
I think both are fantastic movies. I really, really enjoyed OUTIA the first time I saw it and I think it holds up very well to the Godfather, which, ironically enough, the director chose to forego in order to direct OUTIA.
And hell, Goodfellas is just a straight up classic.
Overall, the pacing of OUTIA is much slower, the character development much more meticulous, and the time period vastly different. I don't see how you can compare the two to be honest. They're totally different movies.
I love them both for different reasons. But, because of its re-watchability, Goodfellas is easily one of my favorite mob movies...

I'd say the opposite. casino was like watching a bad Goodfellas II.

I hope you are not serious, its not even in the same class as The Godfather

There's no comparison at all between the two movies. You need only look at Deniro, and how different his respective roles were. They're not just different films, they're different genres.

OUTIA is a great flick, one of my favs. I've soured on Goodfellas because ive seen it so many times. The Godfather is better than both of those though.

I actually liked Godfather II better than the original.
