Goodfella’s Question

Was Jimmy (De Niro) planning on killing Karen during the “pick your dresses” scene?
OR
Was that the moment whenever Jimmy realized how paranoid Karen & Henry both were and realized he had to take Henry out?
Such a suspenseful scene for an entertaining, fantastic film. The camaraderie between the fellas never gets old

It's up for debate. But.... Jimmy is on the sidewalk looking around as if to make sure the coast is clear while encouraging her to go on. She looks in and sees two mugs stacking boxes and no dresses. spidey senses kick in and she's gone.

I'm not even sure he was going to kill Henry. The paranoia made everybody a coin toss away from losing everything. Either way Karen was right to walk away. Such a good movie.

So many elements to consider..
Henry was coming off a drug addiction and already witnessed Jimmy kill everyone in their circle for less. It probably cause mad paranoia for him and Karen.

Yes and the money he gives Karen is their fee, which they were going to take off her body.

I'm not sure how it could be taken any other way than he was trying to kill her, or at best have her mugged/beaten/robbed as a message to Henry.
But just the shadiness of it and how much he was egging her on to go in there with those dudes. Plus, like someone mentioned, he was already having people murked for a lot less and Henry/Karen were just as big of a threat to him, if not bigger.
Great movie, and good for Karen for recognizing it and peacing the frick out.

Scorsese does a brilliant job by not answering that question. It is such a paranoid fueled scene that helps you get into the mindset of Jimmy, Karen, and Henry. I think she would have been killed. She had a lot of knowledge of all the crimes Jimmy and Henry committed. Remember, Jimmy would have been killed if his role in the drug dealing was found out.

The story is shared by an unreliable narrator with intense paranoia. Immediately following the scene, there is a "one way" and "don't walk" sign that seems to suggest it was a hit and we're made to believe that she was going to get killed. What goes against this for me, is that Jimmy wasn't exactly the type of guy to allow someone to walk away? Like if he really wanted Karen killed, wouldn't he have found a way to close the deal? Also, all of the deaths from the Lufthansa heist were done neatly and covertly...do we think he would've taken her out immediately after walking down the street with her? What makes more sense to me, is that it was a test to see if Henry/Karen still trusted Jimmy.
So
Was that the moment whenever Jimmy realized how paranoid Karen & Henry both were and realized he had to take Henry out?

One other alternate interpretation I've considered...in the "funny guy" scene, is it possible Tommy was legitimately offended/pissed off at first? We already know "spit shine tommy" has a crazy fragile ego and impulse control disorder. And when he had Henry clearly crapping his pants maybe THEN he knew he had the upper hand over him again and only then decided to let up? Or is it more likely he was just messing with him the whole time?

Yeah after watching it last night, First time I felt it was more of a test by Jimmy and the paranoia stemmed from Karen.
Other times prior, I always felt he would 100% kill her

He was gonna take her out for sure.
Also, remember Karen talking to the cop and saying they wanted Henry, not her, but the cop said none of them were safe and they would get her to get to him.

The scene when Henry Hill call his l lawyer in my Blue Heaven to tell him he got married just not under his real name, actually happened in real life. They had to get Hill's marriage annulled while he was in witness protection.

Even close to 60 years ago, men realized that it was always a good idea to kill a Karen.
