Saw it today, small crowd at the theater not a good sign. Movie was kind of disappointing. The save the Earth, green message was really hamfisted but at least they that woman out to be somewhat of a villain and really not likeable. The orca thing was kind of stupid. The fights were once again all at night and in the rain. The monsters looked cool but their interactions were somewhat lame. Godzilla eating Ghidorah was unexpected. I was hoping he would come back to fight Godzilla and Kong but I guess they will go one on one instead. All the monsters kneeling before Godzilla was stupid too.

I hated it. The script was awful and cliched. The fights were bogged down by shaky editing and cuts to humans screaming or running every couple of seconds.

I actually much prefer the fights of the old movies. This whole film was just a sensory assault for me.

Good fun, entertaining movie. How the hell are they going to make Kong competitive against Godzilla?!

it's all just fantasy - remember, the original Kong was much, much smaller than Godzilla.

I remember the old version where Kong threw Godzilla into outer space

The script made no goddamn sense and made the last movie and maybe even future movies not make any sense.

If Godzilla can control all the other titans, why would he need to fight any of them? He is the King and they literally bow to him.

Why couldn’t he just get the Mutos in the last movie to stop by making them obey?

With that said, nobody should complain about lack of monster/Godzilla screen time for this because it was mostly monsters, which is all anyone should really care about, I guess.

My 12 and 9 year old nephews were hyped after the movie. I enjoyed watching giant monsters fight on a huge screen, but the script could have been so much better.

I’ll still be at Godzilla vs Kong on opening night

There is zero indication in that movie that Godzilla can control other monsters.

Bowing before him doesn't mean he controls them. At all. In fact, they show him fighting them in the post credits scene to keep them away from humans.

They made it a point to say that Ghidorah was controlling them and they just needed to take him out to stop the others from destroying everything.

When Godzilla took over, the same thing applied.

I didn’t stay for the end credit scene (I had boys that needed to go the bathroom), so I don’t know what the end credit scene showed, but if it showed that, then again, it’s just another inconsistency with the writing.

As stated prior, if you just care about the monster fights, with no concern about story or plot, you'll likely enjoy the film. If you actually like a good storyline and decent acting/characterization to go along with the fighting, you'll probably be a little (or a lot) disappointed.

I didn't know there was an end credit scene until I read about it after I got back from seeing it. It sounds like Charles Dance picked up one of Ghidorah's heads after the fight, but he says he won't be in Godzilla vs Kong and that scene may not have anything to do with that movie. The only speculation is that he will sell the DNA to someone who will maybe clone Ghidorah or create Mecha Ghidorah.

Speaking of the final battle scene, it seemed like the monster fight was just background noise to the soldiers looking for El. It should have been the other way around. They also missed a big opportunity to have cameos from Baragon, Anguirus, Gigan, etc instead of just having random monsters.

Toho only gave them the rights to Godzilla, Mothra, King G, and Rodan.

I was kinda hoping the scientist guy who died would come back as a nuclear powered Jet Jaguar. I guess that won't be happening now. Oh well. Maybe there's still hope for Mecha Godzilla and Mecha Ghidorah.

They didn't show the Ghidorah head in the extra scene for nothing. Ghidorah will be back and probably what will happen is Kong and Godzilla will fight, but end up having to team up to not get wasted by a reborn Monster Zero.

You noticed the head growing back after Godzilla tore it off, The King should have eaten the whole thing.

Just got back from watching this with my son. The fight scenes were spectacular, and yes, the plot was crazy and best not examined too closely.

I commented to my son at the time, when they found Emma, I'd have shot her. Definitely if I was one of the soldiers. Bitch released the apocalypse for "reasons"... I mean, you really can't get away from the fact that she is basically a comic book villain. Reviving the Titans to balance mankind's destruction of the planet= killing millions of people so we don't have as large a global footprint. She must have studied at the Thanos School of Philosophy.

And yep, Monarch devoting all that effort to save 2 people, when people worldwide are being slaughtered, sorta mind-boggling.

As an aside, regarding the extra monsters- amazing that Japan could create such memorable creatures, while the "new" ones were so generic. I guess they don't want to risk the "Boba Fett" effect- making a random throwaway character that looks so cool, you demand more of that character.

Regarding the Godzilla-Ghidorah matchups, I'd say Godzilla was generally the one winning those slugfests. He ripped a head off in Antarctica, and looked like he had the win in hand in the ocean; I gotta think he's more at home in the water than Ghidorah was. Yeah, he was taking a lot of hits, but he was tanking those, seemed like the more durable of the two.

I swear some of y’all either don’t pay attention to the movies you watch or have very little recall just hours later.

Godzilla ripped one of Ghidorah’s head off the coast of Isla de Marta right before the Oxygen Bomb went off.

Emma didn’t “revive” any of the Titans. Ghidorah woke them up while standing atop the mountain/volcano on Isla de Marta after he grew back his head.

As for the generic monsters, the primary monsters in this movie were all Toho creations. The two background monsters who received the most attention in this one were the Wooly Mammoth one who most people liked and a smaller version of the non-aerial Muto from the 2014 movie.

whatever

I wasn't analyzing and writing down the plot point by point.

It was Emma's plan to release the Titans. She did release Monster Zero, after Godzilla had been incognito for 5 years. You may recall this particular critter was considered off-limits even by Monarch, as they didn't reveal there was something in Antartica (he was 'off books'). She therefore is responsible for what happened.
She also was the one who contacted Jonah Alan and betrayed Monarch (as he said, it was her plan), and looked the other way as her colleagues were murdered. Everyone at two separate sites, with more implied in the past.

And interspersed with the petty bickering with her ex-husband (who's trying to save her arse), she delivers a crazy supervillain justification speech:
humans are polluting the earth and driving various species of dung beetle to extinction, so to save the earth (note: she doesn't say mankind), she released these monsters with the intention of curbing the "human infection", like a fever to fight it off.
I'd say that places her squarely on top of the Public Enemy list, as of now.

If you wanted a more dramatic moment, it should have been her sacrificing herself, not Dr Serazawa randomly doing it. He does so because someone has to revive Godzilla; she should have to atone for her crimes.

Like others said, you have to disconnect your brain a good bit to enjoy the actual story. Beyond the concept of the giant monsters, we have Boeing Osprey aircraft keeping up with jet fighters during the fight with Rodan, and crashlanding inside a giant B2 style of stealth aircraft.

**silly extra note, here's another problem

The Apex is clearly based on the B2, and thus should be similar in design. Here's a tidbit from the wikipedia on the B2:
quote:

Due to the B-2's composite structure, it is required to stay 40 miles away from thunderstorms, to avoid static discharge and lightning strikes.
In other words, you keep this plane away from Monster Zero, since it seems to generate storms.

But as a mindless monster movie, this film tops the list. Absolutely no arguing that. The monsters are fantastic, the rest is just tacked on to make it more than a highlight reel of fights.

It was a good movie, but 2014 was a lil bit better . No doubt the human element sucked. It was almost preposterous TBH

Wish they would have had more Mothra. They should have shown more about the monsters instead of wasted special effects and time on explosions, military, etc.

There was one Asian woman (Zhang Ziyi) that was really connected to Mothra, so not exactly, but we are shown pictures of her mother who had a twin and her grandmother who also had a twin. They were all members of Monarch.

Emma was forced to release Ghidorah and she even said directly to Jonah that she didn’t want them to wreak havoc on the whole world and wanted to release them one at a time, not all at once. Even then, she wasn’t the one who “released” or as you said revived them. That was Ghidorah.

And even then I’ve said I had issues with her plot line. Her going from disliking the Kaiju/Titans due to her son’s death to wanting to “control” them via the ORCA was a natural plot line. Made sense. Her wanting to unleash them to “heal the planet” was not a natural plot line. Why she would ever trust Jonah Allan is beyond me unless she genuinely didn’t know his end goals. Kind of reminds me of the dynamic between the mob and the Joker in The Dark Knight. Emma wants Jonah’s help for a very specific reason but she doesn’t know really who she’s dealing with - a mad man who wants to see the world burn.

Her husband’s motives are simple and direct. Glad he’s going to have a role in Kong vs. Godzilla and with Monarch.

From the brief synopsis of KvG it sounds like Monarch will be exploring some of those Hollow Earth cities in the sequel and that there will be a counter organization to Allan’s group that wants to completely wipe the Titans from the face of the Earth. Maybe they are his buyers for the Ghidorah head. Create their own mecha kaiju, wipe out the existing ones and then terminate their own.

Either way, I’m always down for a kaiju throw down and hope that this movie is a success and Rampage 2 gets filming soon. Would be great to have 5 consecutive years of Kaiju battles on screen, with possibly more.
