This was peak monster on monster action.

*ETA - I'll avoid spoilers until someone starts that thread. All I'll say is if Minus One was a 9.5, I'd give Minus Zero a 9.0.

And some of the rumors I heard? Did not play out on screen.

I was powerful, but not too loud. It definitely comes strong, make no mistake.

AMC had the 2 ft tall Godzilla 'bucket' as I saw someone walking out just as I was getting there. Too damn funny. It's basically a Godzilla figure that's hollow and allows you to put maybe a bag's worth of popcorn in there? Neat for the folks who collect that stuff, not for me though.

We just saw it in IMAX at an AMC. Wife and I enjoyed it. Love the classic Godzilla theme....

This AMC had Godzilla buckets as you described - basically a hollow statue and they had a large bucket with Godzilla and Ghidora figures built into it on the rim.

We passed on those.

Very mild spoiler

We just got out of the Dolby screening. Epic.

Man I loved the callback scene to the OG artwork!

Some guy bought the statue bucket as we walked in and took his pic in front of the big IMAX poster that thing is very cool

I kept waiting for a “yeah and?“, Some subtle drop to end the movie on, but it just kind of …ended. Might have to watch it again to see, but it definitely was a change from the last one.

I do feel like it was a tad overly focused on the human characters from an American perspective. But I also feel like maybe that's how Japanese media works in general? It felt like it plodded a bit at times with the soap opera melodrama

I put on the 1991 Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah a few weeks ago and it felt like it had that same general feel

But I'm not complaining too much because Supernova is coming and we'll get some awesome giga Godzilla action there

Just a few thoughts, saw it last night:

1. This movie is loud in IMAX, very loud. Maybe with more people the sound would come down some.

2. I know it is hard to find good child actors, but we were really disliking Akiko by the end of the movie. The fake crying was terrible. Acting is on par with the old movies though.

3. The end of the monster fight???

4. Loved everything else. I was laughing at some things and the all the people from - One in this movie.

5. The American actors etc., were terrible. Although I would assume they were more of a homage to the old films.

Some are saying Americans won't like being seen as the villains through the perspective of most Japanese, historically speaking, but the movie also makes clear that their own gov sucks and is also to blame for their post war status. I think it's fine, btw.

I don't think that'll be too big of an issue for us given it's based in a different time, and the franchise has a history of some nuanced political commentary I'd think

The cheesiness of the Americans stood out here a little too much though for a modern movie

Yes, the Americans were stereotypical, seen through a Japanese lens, then interpreted back to an American audience.

I had no problem plus it was a very minor part of the story.

My son and I just got done seeing it and we liked it. The monster scenes are great and King Ghidorah is badass. The only thing we didn't like was the very ending with the family, - it was nonsensical. Also the end of the monster fight came too quickly - if you aren't paying close attention you could miss it.

I kept thinking - what am I missing here? I know Yamazaki doesn't just toss things in there for no reason, and I get some of it may be lost in translation (so to say) with the culture differences, but I just took it at face value. I wasn't thrilled with it, but I assume he's trying to convey something that might be more appreciated with the Japanese audience.

Spoilers

The logo looked like Akiko praying, as we saw at the end. Coincidence? I think not, but was it necessary?

Koiche and Noriko planning on leaving Akiko at an orphanage, was just odd. She's the bond that holds the three of them together. I guess the director was trying to bring up the orphans of war, of the atomic bombs, whatever, but it seemed too extra for the moment. Unnecessary.

I think more time could have been spent on making Ghidora into a bigger threat, and supremely evil . Godzilla's rage was at humanity, but as he reemerged, this version shouldn't carry that rage over at such an extent.
