Why did the buttonmen who jumped Frankie Five Angels say "Michael Corleone says hello" when the intent was to kill him?

why does anyone ever say anything to the person they're about to kill?

Often asked myself this question. Only answer I came up with was: "That's what it says in the script."

He explained that Appolonia would lose a father instead of gaining a husband if he refused to consent. Pretty clear.

Nah, he said he would do that if he told the people who were looking for him where he was located.

This tells me you either didn't listen closely to the dialogue, or it simply went right over your head---------------or both.

Why in the world would Appolonia’s father allow her to marry Michael. I mean he basically told him he was a gangster. Hmmm.

Even in 1945, which was the time the film was set in.

Michael, didnt want to marry a "modern" American Woman.

That's why Frankie decides to testify, until they show him they can get to his family even back in Sicily, and Tom gives him the talk about Roman honor.

The scene with Frankie and Tom is one of the greatest scenes in either movie.

And i don't think Frankie changed his testimony because he thought they could get to his family. He already knew that was the case. He changed it because the presence of this brother It was a reminder of the Sicilian code of omertà, or the code of silence. Pentangeli was reminded of his Sicilian heritage, and that narcking on Michael would be a cardinal sin in the society that he came from. He saw changing his testimony as the honorable thing to do at that point.

For me, that was the implied meaning of that whole scene. Testifying against the mob with his brother present would have made him look a traitor in his brother's eyes and he didn't want that stain on his families name.

According to some people who have channels researching stuff like this and Goodfellas, Pentangeli had bastard children living under his brother’s protection in Sicily. If he broke Omertà, they were dead.

And yet, not a single time was the word "Mafia" mentioned in "The Godfather".

Joe Colombo's Italian American Civil Rights League helped make sure of that, along with the real Mafia's backing.

I just disagree. The father saw an opportunity for his daughter. He didn't serve up Appolonia out of any fear, imo.

Was this information mentioned in the book, because I don't recall it being mentioned in the movie and we all know how Hollywood takes liberties between the book and movie.

If it's not mentioned in either source, then it's simply speculation by these so-called researchers because it's a fictional story loosely based on fact.

It may have been in the expanded book series, which is of questionable canon.

That sounds logical but I always took it to mean his brother being there with them showed they didn’t order the hit on him.

And Frankie survives, thinking MIchael ordered a hit on him. It works out, whether the line was ad libbed or not.

The only reason Frankie survives is because the hit was interrupted by a couple of cops, one of which was gunned down in the street if I recall. Which makes it appear as though Frank survived by pure luck and poor timing on the part of the Rosato Brothers.
