I really wish they would do a band of brothers/the pacific type mini series about the civil war

That would be great but I don’t see any film maker producing a quality piece on the subject in today’s political environment.

They should. But they won't.

They could but just like BOB it would just be following a company from one side - most likely the North.

That's not remotely as interesting as to following a few characters in regements from both sides.

That would be the only way to do it. A real brother vs. brother mini-series.

But it would take real skill to pull it off without confusing the audience with too many stories and characters going back and forth.

So yeah, something worth watching probably won't get made. It's far easier to do a Glory type mini-series follow one infantry from one side and revolve it around about 5 soldiers.

You also have to show the United States as morally bankrupt as the Axis powers. Can't be showing America in a positive light, after all.

I remember the mini-series ‘North and South’ being enjoyable.

I like both. Stephen Lang is awesome in both. Robert Duval’s Lee is far superior to Martin Sheen.

Gettysburg might be a better movie but the story of Stonewall Jackson is awesome.

So because Confederates call themselves Americans its true? Why would I believe a traitor?

Long live America.

I think they are two different movies with two different objectives. Gods and Generals really focuses on the characters primarily Stonewall Jackson who is a complicated character and I think that Stephen Lang just nails it as Jackson

This. If you are interested in Stonewall Jackson, one of the most fascinating figures of the war, this film was pretty awesome. That said, objectively speaking, Gettysburg was a better produced feature.
Gods and Generals also featured these scenes:

Lee refuses UNion command

and

Bonnie Blue Flag

Gettysburg is probably as good as it gets (or will get) as far as Civil War movies.

Glory says high, but yes Gettysburg is a good movie

The soundtracks for both movies are outstanding.

They both were. The opening credits of Gods and Generals with all the unit banners was moving, even poignant.

Isn't Gods and Generals basically a Civil War reenactment disguised as a feature film?

Certainly the battle scenes were that to a large extent. This might also be said of Gettysburg.

I thought some of the dialogue in G and G, particularly the mother in Fredericksburg, was a bit stilted. Some of the interactions between the Federal officers leading up to the attack were okay. Same with Jackson and others.

Jackson's speeches to his men were awesome.

Death of Stonewall Jackson was huge turn of events. If he is not killed before Gettysburg than that battle results may have been different.

Visited Gettysburg last year. Standing at where Pickett's charge started was surreal. Can't believe those men so willing marched to their death across that field.

The park is making the area more and more like it was back during the battle. The little house that was Lee's quarters had a hotel behind it and it was torn down to preserve the battlefield grounds.

Recommend that everyone go and visit it.

Read Killer Angels in college which Gettysburg movie based off. Only missing person is Sickles.

I've had Gods and Generals in my Amazon queue for six months. I wasn't going to put myself through watching it unless I knew I'd get the reward of Gettysburg also.

I just realized I probably haven't been able to find Gettysburg on streaming because I've been searching for the killer angels this whole time.

I started to post this very same thing last night but didn’t send it. Good chance that Jackson convinces Lee to a different plan at Gettysburg which could have led to a victory there, which in turn gives the South a very very thin chance at winning the whole war, ONLY due to a negative opinion of the war in the North.
From a totally military standpoint the South could never ever beat the North. The resources, population, and technology were too superior.

No debate. I thought Daniels and Berenger were excellent in their portrayals of Chamberlain and Longstreet. I really think as actors bot of them are underappreciated. Daniels can do it all including comedy and characters and Berenger just morphs into a character in ways that is better even than DeNiro and Depp. There was a TNT mini series some years back about the Rough Riders and the Spanish American War where Berenger played Teddy Roosevelt and historians were saying that he nailed it from facial expressions and the pitch of his voice and mannerisms.

I do think though, that Duvall was a better Lee than Sheen was.....plus Duvall is a true Virginian.

That being said, it's a damned shame that Berenger is not in more movies

They thought (hoped) that a good deal of the Federal emplacements has been damaged or destroyed by the nearly hour long barrage from 150 Confederate artillery pieces.

The Federal artillery, which slowed down their rate of return fire to conserve rounds for the infantry charge that was sure to come, played a part into lulling the boys in gray into a false sense of success.

Unfortunately for the southerners, the artillery fuses burned slower than they were supposed to (I have heard that they were impacted by humidity at the time of manufacture and storage; the fuses at Gettysburg came from the arsenals at Charleston and Selma, those before had come from Richmond) and a good many of the shells exploded well behind Federal lines.
