I've enjoyed reading everyone's thoughts. It's been years since I read the books so I've forgotten a lot.
I don't recall Mance being as obvious that their intent was to just get south of the wall? My recollection is that John Snow invited them south only after they knew they were defeated and to augment the Night's Watch.
If I'm a Hodor the way it's set up I'd assume 100,000 wildlings want south of the wall and Stannis needs troops. Mance and Stannis could partner and suddenly you have a real force in the north. Why then would John Snow hinder this? He knows and respects Mance, he says Stannis is the true king- unless he thinks the wildlings are needed to defend the wall from the white walkers...
That's what I was left thinking after last night.

Because Mance intended that the Free Folk keep up there way of life. That would lead to the deaths of thousands in the North. If they could be controlled, then no problem, which is why Jon and Stannis let them through when they have control over them.

Interesting comments by GRRM on Shae being a Varys plant.
That was another aspect I felt the show missed last night. After Jamie and Tyrion have their talk in the tunnels varys is leading Tyrion and kinda nudges Tyrion to the Hands chambers.
And after reading that interview it makes sense that Varys may have plotted the entire thing.
But from the show last night Tyrion's motivation seems to be that he will just become what people already think about him?

Yeah. I don't think he planted Shae there, since she was merely gravy at that point. I do think he put the chest below the crossbow though, since that sounded highly suspicious that a chest would be below there. I think he was counting on Tyrion entering silently, him seeing the crossbow, and then killing Tywin with it. Varys could have easily stopped Tyrion from going up there, but he goaded him into it.

except Varys brought Tyrion to the ship, watched him be loaded on to the deck, heard the bells tolling for the death of Tywin and realized he couldnt go back to king's landing because he would be blamed as a co-conspirator for the murder of the king's Hand. So the look on his face when he says "what have you done" and then his resignation while sitting on the deck next to Tyrion's box tells me he didnt plan the murder at all.

But that's the show, not the books. Varys certainly goaded Tyrion into killing him in the books and gave incredibly specific details on how to get into Tywin's bedchamber. He never fooled me for a second that that was what he wanted.
