I could be confusing it with another name change. I know for sure they changed someone's name to cut down on confusion.
Asha was one and Jayne was the other. The first season saw a lot of the hand maiden Jayne and she is pretty essential going forward, so they changed Jeyne Westerling's name to ease confusion on that too.
There are lots of overlapping names to the extent it will be very tough to keep up from the book readers to the show watchers.

Given the budget constraints I think the changes were done very well. They were quick, effective, and deeper than just scratching the surface.
Agreed. They can't do it all and I trust the writers to make the correct judgements. They have done a pretty great job the first 2 seasons and I don't expect that to change now.

Most disappointing scene: the Manticore.
I was hoping for something a lil more inventive than a green scorpion w a man's face on it. It was cgi after all, so WTF?
Go crazy!
Better job with the Giant.
Given that, I was much less meh after second viewing. A lot of setup done in less than an hour, and without a lot of confusing jumping around to spoon-feed the illiterates...(except the slaughtered Northmen at Harrenhal, I mean, I get it - no Weasel-but it was a real WTF moment at first) But Great things still to come (cough, Dracarys, cough). It was a necessary evil...and if this is as bad as it gets, I'll take it!
Was it Grey Worm that lost the nipple in the book?
Thoughts:
-Dance vs Dinklage: fricking amazing. Like a heavyweight fight-slow and deliberate, but the landed blows were MFers.
"Because I can't prove you're not MINE!"
frick me.
-Sam the (not) Slayer...could still happen, after the mutiny to come at Craster's, maybe...and LC Mormont's berating over the ravens seems like a setup for Sam to kick some arse...but in all honesty, to omit it altogether would have ZERO effect on Tarly's plot line...he will still end up a bookworm and at the Citadel eventually...but would prove the value of obsidian vs Others.
I thought Jon left Ghost with Sam when he left w QHH in the book, no? I don't remember him running around Mance's camp when I read...but that was many brain cells ago.

I really like Roose. Really soft spoken and badass. It will b so shocking when he slips his sword in Jon's back

That would be a major rewrite so...
Although I assume you mean Robb

Ghost comes with him on the ranging and when they have to scale the cliff he tells Ghost to find his way back to the wall.

No, Roose goes up North and organizes Jon's assassination

Yeah, Ghost actually helps Jon take out QHH during their duel as well.
Ghost not being with Jon is the only thing that really annoyed me with this episode.
Of course I'm expecting Sam to take out an Other at some point still, otherwise that will be really annoying as well.

I really enjoyed this episode and I'm glad you have not re-read the book recently so that I can't be nitpicking all the small details. a few observations:
Tywin and Tyrion was clearly one of the highlights. It's going to be great to see them go at it over the next two seasons.
I like how they handled the Davos/Stannis/Melisandre storyline. My only gripe would be that in the book they made it clear she had seen it in her flames that he was going to try and kill her. That made her so much creepier.
I didn't mind the changes at the Fist. I assume Sam the Slayer might just happen on their way back to Craster or after. Not worried.
The Barristan reveal was great but you knew it was coming when they put his last scene in the "previously on Game of Thrones" segment.
Overall very good premiere. Excited to see Arya, Jamie, and the Reeds next episode. Oh, and hopefully we'll see more of Theon and what happened at Winterfell.

Keep book 4 and 5 spoilers out of this please. Only halfway through Feast. Been done with Storm for over a year though.

And that wasn't directed to you, but the Roose/Jon stuff

I'm hoping they give The Hound some serious screen time this season with Arya and the gang. Next weeks episode should be intense. can't wait for the losing hand freakout from the non readers.

This may have been addressed in previous posts but it's 12 pages long.
Were there girl Unsullied?
I can understand why Barristan was immediately recognized since we could see his face.
Where was Strong Belwas?
I totally mispronounced Qyburn in the book.

Honestly my biggest dissapointment is the omission of Mance's cloak speech followed by Jon's "bastard" story. Such a small detail that would've made that meeting much more epic.
This and the omission of Strong Belwas were the only things that disappointed me about the episode. All in all, it was an excellent premiere.

In the book, he doesn't kill the Other until after the initial retreat from The Fist. He falls behind the group because he is a fatty fatty no friends and is attacked by the Other. It should happen before they arrive at Craster's.

Well the book says they're all eunuchs, so I'm gonna say no.
