Sorry I assumed this was the thread for discussion of the episode as pertains to the story progression. It's my first time posting in the book reader thread so i dont know the proper etiquette. Maybe we should put that in the OP or something for the new people like me.

Biggest change that I noticed was they identified Whitebeard way too early. I feel like it was an entire book where he was Whitebeard and not the Bold
And that goes in with no fatass awesome gladitor!

So this is the spoiler thread that is not spoiler thread for the last 2 books?

Although I see why the did it. I doubt the reveal would have much effect on the audience if the drag out a hidden identity who has gotten 30 seconds of screen time previous to this season.

Yeah they waited much longer to reveal him as Barristan but I understand that they couldn't do that in the show.
I hope they find some way to bring Strong Belwas into the story. He's one of my favorite characters. Again due to constraints I would begrudgingly understand if they didn't.
I was fine with most of the episode. It would have been nice to have the battle at the fist and they could have done a better job describing what happened at Harrenhall but I can accept the changes. Overall I was happy. The Tyrion\Tywin scenes really made the episode. I hope they find ways to get these two on the screen together as much as possible.

I think Roose's character up to this point is portrayed true to the book- he's still the loyal Stark bannerman, humble and gracious to his Liege Lord...on par w GJ Umber n other Generals of the Northern host. IIRC, his treachery isn't even hinted at till TRW...cept for Weasel knowing not to trust him out of instinct and his general creepiness at Hhl.
We just don't have Ramsey Snow/ Reek(I) storyline to play counterpoint...yet. I, for one, thought RS's maneuverings and deceit were unknown by RB at this point in the reading; I saw RS's motivations the same as Theon's RE Winterfell, etc.

Me too. I didn't even think that they could be working together at this point in the story.

I don't know. Robb was certainly frightened of Roose and Arya never trusted him with her identity, not to mention what he later does with Jaime. I was definitely thinking there was something majorly wrong with Roose Bolton.

I'm pretty sure you don't know the true intentions of the wildlings at this point, so you might want to back off telling them about how they want to get to safety behind the wall in the other thread.
QUESTION:
About the wildlings and their true intentions. Mance Rayder stated that he was looking for the Horn of Jarumon (SP?). It was said he was digging up many of the old heroes in order to find it. The horn , when blow was supposed to bring the wall down. How does this agree with them supposedly seeking shelter behind the wall? If they brought down the wall, how would they stop the Others and the white walkers?
Am I missing something here?

That's not how it works. I waited until I finished all the books before coming into the reader thread. If he hasn't finished the books, he needs to stick to the reader thread.

I think it was a "let us in or we all die" thing. Wldings need to get South, one way or the other.

Possibly. I just don't think it fits well except for setting up that there is a horn that will destroy the wall. If the Others have it, south could be screwed.
`As for Harrenhall, I think the omissions suck. Arya time spent there and exposed to the Mountain and the Tickler was a main driver for her character development. Her saving the Northmen vis weasel soup was also huge for her. Then , having Roose not be there was also huge, it set him up as an evil fricker who I do believe was conspiring against the Starks at this point in the books. He wanted to depose the Starks as Wardens of the North and see his own house rise in Stature.
One thing the show did was begin to set up the Roose/Karstark betrayal of Rob. They did show Roose and Karstark together and the old man Karstark was bitching about Jaime being alive and now free while his sons were dead.
Overall it was good, but there is no way the series can be as good as the books. We will just have to accept that.

The fact that the old man Karstark is alive is something of a bother. Rob takes his head after he kills some Lanister prisoners. I think this is before Roose goes to Harenhal and is a big plot point for the betrayal.

Well the book says they're all eunuchs, so I'm gonna say no.
I know but I could have sworn the show had a few girls. Which I knew were wrong.
Could have just been girl looking man eyes.

I know this is beating a dead horse, but, if you want a word-for-word translation, go listen to an audiobook. TV provides an INTERPRETATION, due to its storytelling limitations.

Do you think they will do the Tyrion-Sasha wedding soon? Honestly i think that is going to frick with some of the non-book readers.

Likewise. This falls into the huge category of time constraints in a TV production of any book.

Also but I will be less forgiving.

This was easily the most confusing part of the episode even for a book reader.

Agree but there were many fine moments: Jon Snow's fight with Qhorin, Daenerys commanding her little dragons to burn up Pyat Pree, the giant in the Wilding camp pounding huge stakes into the ground, the scene with the Stark boys with Maester Luwin as he was dying, Arya and Jaqen H'ghar (the face change was killer), Jon meeting Mance Rayder, shite there were just so many great scenes. What a great show.

Hence, "There is no way the series can be as good as the books" because the author of the books is providing you with the thoughts and motivations of the characters. TV is limited by dialogue and finances.
And who said anyone wants a word for word retelling? I think the interplay between Tywin and Arya was very good. although it comes at the cost of some of Arya's character development. Which IMHO, leads to her taking readily to the lessons at the Temple in Brahvos.
