The penultimate episode of “Game of Thrones,” titled “The Bells,” has posted the highest initial viewing rating in series history.

The episode was watched by 12.48 million viewers, which handily trumps the previous record of 12.07 million, held by the season seven finale. Given the colossal numbers put up by “The Bells,” an episode which divided opinion among fans and critics, one would expect that the series finale of the HBO behemoth will steal the penultimate episode’s crown.

HBO will reveal multi-platform viewership for Sunday’s episode later today, but given the initial figures, it’s highly likely that “The Bells” will be the most-watched “Thrones” episode of all time across all platforms (linear, HBOGO and HBO NOW). The figure it has to beat is 17.8 million viewers, which was posted by episode three, “The Long Night.”

If it's so terrible, why do people keep watching?

People are invested and want to see what happens, why is that hard to understand?

Seinfeld finale syndrome as well, tons of people that didn't watch the show regularly tune in because it's a cultural event.

How would you know it was terrible unless you watched it?

Also, think of all the time youve dedicated to it. You arent going to watch an episode? the frick are you talking about?

It would be like divorcing your wife at 95.

Did you really think this was a good point?

from my thread before the season (about the MCU)

i have no real excitement for the ending of GOT and i thought of this thread while reading people on here freaking out about it this morning. why am i not excited? because season 7 was horrible (and seasons 5-6 weren't much better). the final set up just destroyed so much that made the story intriguing and interesting and it's effectively just a chore to finish. i'm curious how D/D finish things, but i'm not excited about it and lack anticipation

No. He has a point. How are you going to know a movie or show sucks until you watch it? We're also one episode away from the series finale. Longtime viewers of the show (such as myself) will watch it no matter what.

I've never watched a single minute of GoT (I don't have HBO). Does it seem like GoT gets hype and discussion far out of proportion to it's actual ratings? I googled the ratings the other day and it is behind some fairly nondescript shows that get zero buzz.

(This is not a statement about the quality of the show. Just a comment on the cultural phenomenon versus actual viewership.)

Critics like indy shite. You'll see stuff you've never heard of before getting 99%.

I'm not talking about critical acclaim. Just water cooler talk/message board chat type stuff. With the amount of posts/threads on this show you'd think it was pulling down Super Bowl numbers weekly. I just find it interesting.

I think it's funny that everyone thinks this season sucks. This is exactly how it has been foreshadowed since season 1. How did you really think it was going to go??

Fricking love this show. Hate that it is ending.

When all is said and done, it will go down as one of the greatest stories we’ve ever watched play out on television. No series has ever garnered as much chatter from the world at-large than GOT.

Viewer totals?

It's officially an HBO product, I imagine there are several network shows with way more access.

I think GoT is the most underrated (in terms of measuring actual viewership) show in history; tons of people are stealing and streaming it, or watching in a way that isn't counted (with friends or family, etc).

I'm curious, what's HBO's actual subscription numbers vs veiwership of the show? I bet that percentage was high.

The episode sucked.

A large majority of people who watched it thought it was one of the better episodes of the series.
