I didn't make it through Book 4 because I was so pissed that they left out most of the main characters.
That's because Book 4 was supposed to be what is now book 4 and book 5 put together, but Martin decided it was too long. So instead of doing half of all the characters stories, he did all of half in book 4 and he is doing the rest in book 5.

OK, I knew nothing about this before I watched it, but here is what I saw:
- beheadings
- creepy undead looking dudes with glowing blue eyes, and superhuman strength and speed (doing beheadings)
- wedding night rape
- animalistic rear-entry incest
- a horny, drunken, bitter midget in a whore house 5-way
- several pairs of pretty, pretty titties
- a public murder/rape wedding dance scene
- plenty of pseudohistorical and made-up mythology-esque jargon and proper names like "Winterfell" etc., worthy of a really, really nerdy and lonely 8th grader's creative writing project
- puppy rescue
It all adds up to the GREATEST.SHOW.EVAAAR?
Can they possibly keep up this pace week after week?

Yeah I gotta say, way too much incest for me...

There will be 10 episodes the first season.
It will run 6 seasons if it does well.
As expensive as it looks to produce, I doubt that.

Actually, HBO has commented already that they were content with the cost of production.
There were LOTS of concerns by everyone, fans and execs alike about this series being another "Rome"
Part of the reason why it was greenlit was probably because this pilot was done under budget.
On another note, anyone a little irritated they didn't do the minor but important touch of giving Dany and Viserys violet eyes?
Or am I mistaken and those two don't have that Valyrian trademark?
I like a lot of the casting.....Cat and Greyjoy don't sit right with me though.
Greyjoy doesn't just seem to fit, and Cat is a little too plain for the book descriptions

Rome was what I was thinking about.
This looks more expensive than Rome so I had concerns it might meet the same fate.

Sansa has much too much red hair. She is also incredibly tall.
Cat is too plain looking.
Illyrio is no where near fat enough
Rob looks way too old
Cersei is no where near hot enough
Robert is not nearly tall enough
The Others don't look anything like they are described
The Wights didn't have correct skin complexion
Targ siblings didn't have Violet eyes
They didn't ever introduce Theon
Never introduced Rikon
Joffrey doesn't seem near tall enough
Ned and Jon dont look alike at all
But I can easily overlook nearly all the above to be honest.
The episode was incredibly fast paced, It covered a lot of ground. I wonder how they will handle the episodes once the storyline breaks off into 5 separate plotlines.
I didn't think, but knew that would have to be the ending of the pilot. They actually did leave out the semi-touching more consensual scene between Dany and Drogo on the beach, he didn't rape her by the way people. I was kind of upset about the scene of finding the Direwolf pups, since the opening and that scene were among my favorites from the entire series.
The episode didn't really change much from the novels or even leave out vital information. They added a scene here or there, but overall it was basically spot on.
Which means that I can not wait for a complete OH shite moment which will happen this season.

I didn't think they introduced Theon...didn't remember seeing him.
The OH shite moments are seriously gonna piss some viewers off if they haven't read the books. My son was pissed that Bran got thrown out the window and I wouldn't tell him anything (whether he lives or dies). But hopefully the viewers will keep tuning in and keep the series going through to the conclusion.
Got about 50 pages left to go in the 4th book. Don't like it. I'm skipping through a lot of those extra new characters and just getting the basics. If they do too many of these new people too quickly in the show it will turn some people off because of the complexity.
Overall, I think the characters were well cast, particularly the Stark kids. In the book I do kind of keep seeing the Queen (Cersei) as Glenn Close, though. Crazy arse bitch and I hate her.
BTW, we may need a Game of Thrones FAQ for newbies so the official thread doesn't become a mass of confusion trying to explain who is who doing what and why. We could keep the FAQ limited to the progress of the episodes. ILUV and Heygirl's questions, along with several others, makes me think we need one. Stickied, maybe?

He was there, and took center stage multiple times.
Which leads me to my other problem with Greyjoy....I have problem telling him and Robb apart.
I can see Arya, Bran, Jon, and Sansa and know who is who with no context.
Greyjoy and Robb could swap and I wouldn't know better.

He was talking about the twists that deviate hard from the book plot to throw off the readers as well.
I am not sure that will happen here. The world is too complex, and too well laid out.
SPOILERS
If it does happen, I have to wonder if a certain character will live past season 1...

I know who you're talking about...I don't see that character living past episode 4 or 5 at the speed the story is going. Maybe 6, tops.

10 minutes on Wikipedia answered all of my questions.
This and Camelot are good, but frick it makes me want more Roman shows in the vein of Spartacus.

Which will probably not do the story so much justice as it should. That character was well received and then when they disappeared people actually felt a bit of loss.
The speed of the story and not so much on screen time spent focus on individual characters could simply make it feel like just a tally on the death toll.

I think we need a seperate thread for those of us who read the books.
Theon was Ned's sword bearer at the execution.

Also the one that told Rob "I take orders from your father, not from you." when they found the wolf pups

Someone look at my first post and tell me if the text in the family trees are too small to read comfortably. Thanks.

What's the verdict on the pilot episode? I'm gonna wait until the season is over to watch it. Is it bloody? Good action and interesting characters so far?
