So the blacksmith is heir to the Seven Kingdoms? Do I understand that correctly? He's older than the spoiled brat of a prince and - though he is a bastard - has a more legitimate claim to the throne due to age. Am I reading into primogeniture correctly?
The heir would have to be 100% highborn... the book Lord Stark is reading is very interesting however....

be very careful especially if you are taking finals or doing anything important. I am almost done with book 1 but I took the battery out of my nook so I can pass finals.

Yeah, you're all right. I just looked it up and I don't think there has ever been a case where an illegitimate child ever had a legal claim to the throne.
Though it does stand to reason that he could be a future king considering the harsh and brutal nature of the Lannisters. He might become the leader of a rebellion in the future. But I don't know...I haven't read the books.
The closest the I can think of is William the Conqueror, he was a bastard and the only son of Robert the Duke of Normandy. Robert recognized William in his will and left Normandy to him. His mother also had noble blood. William used one of his father's blood lines to claim the British Throne, and defeated Harold in the Battle of Hastings and win the throne.

Robert's bastard could join Ned's bastard on the wall
Note: I'm only about 250 pages into the first book so if this actually happens I didn't mean to post a spoiler.

Wow spot on. They actually form a band of men called the Inglorious Basterds and go wildling hunting.

Elizabeth I was technically illegitimate since Henry VIII declared himself head of the church of England to annul his marriage to her mother (Anne Boleyn.)

I recall reading something about how Snow could be made noble by the stroke of someone's pen.

My wife's been watching it with me, but I think she's about to quit. It's too much for her to keep up with, and all of her questions during the show are driving me crazy.

my wife has read all four books that are out and has been harassing me to read them for years. it took the series starting to finally motivate me to read the first one. now, i can't wait to start the second one.

It would be awesome if they beat an Other to death with a bat like in Inglorious Basterds.
