yep...great episode. I was one of the one's saying the first episode was slow. This one was great. I'm glad the little boy seemed to survive the fall. Can't wait to see the fallout from that!

I get that if a dog attacks someone in society they're going to want it put down, but why does Baratheon want to appease his wife when he clearly doesn't give a frick about what she thinks..."hey, I know, Ned is the only guy I trust, I need his help above all to try to hold onto my power. Let's really demonstrate that he's my best friend, and kill the pet, who clearly had nothing to do with this, of his daughter, who I'm arranging to marry my sniveling son. Yeah, that's the ticket." It didn't seem to ring true to the character's motivations. Seemed like a cheap way to get the audience to hate the queen...you know, since we already hate her.
I wondered this as well when I read the book. I stopped giving a shite about Baratheon after that.

The scene goes a long way toward reinforcing the idea that the Lannisters call the shots in Robert's court.
Robert is outnumbered and he's been hammered into submission even though he has the authority of the king. My main thought about Robert is that he's a man who's in over his head as regent. He's not dumb, he's just too straightforward. He expects people to be honest with him, and they will never be completely honest with a king. I would be frustrated, too, if I were him.
That's also why we see him so zealous at striking out at the Targaryens. Another frustration he can't completely rid himself of. Their existence mocks him. His family mocks him... he suspects something isn't right about the kids. His people mock him... some call him "Usurper." Robert is less stable than people see at the surface.

Solid post, but you may want to edit the part about the kids.

I'm about 2/3 of the way through the first book and his character is by far the best.

It also is used to show that Ned will follow the Robert's instructions no matter how much he disagrees with him. Also, Ned always does the hard killings himself - i.e. the Watch's deserter from the opening scene of the series.

I loved this episode. It was much better than the pilot. I truly felt the need to punch Joff on several occasions. They did a great job of making you feel terrible for Lady, gods I hate Cersei. Stupid, stupid stupid Sansa, take off your fairytale glasses and see Joff for what he is.
As far as Robert, I know we all wanted him to tell Cersei to jump off a bridge, but in reality he has to keep some sort of peace in his household. Also, Robert doesn't see the direwolves as anything more than a novelty, so to him it seems like an ok compromise.
Summer getting the assassin was AWESOME! Cat will love him now. (I won't go into my diatribe about Cat not being a total bitch here).
Lastly, like someone else said, where the hell is Ghost? I didn't see him once this episode, even though it was full of direwolves. Can't wait to see the wall, Ser Allister Thorn being a total dick, and Jon being an all around badass. Man, I love this show.

I was looking for Ghost when Jon and Ned say their goodbyes. He should have been there, running with Jon.
But he was there at the end of the episode, or it may have been the previews for next week.
Yeah, Summer taking out the assassin was money.

As the story progresses Arya shines more and more. The second book she's truly a badass.
Just so.

Simple question that probably has been asked:
I have stayed away from this because I heard the books were great. Should I just start to read them and avoid the show? Or watch the show?

He wasn't introduced, but he was standing next to Bran in the first episode when the Starks were lined up to meet Robert.

Really up to you. The books are fantastic though. I think the show does a better job of getting you into the series though.

I'm about to buy this set. Kinda hard to beat it for just $20. I'm hoping I'll have them all read by S2.
You'll have them read within 2 months probably. Even if you aren't a big reader they will suck you in. Its so hard to put it down.

I say go ahead and let the show surprise you. I've read the books and I push them onto everyone I know... but I think it would be a unique experience to just let the show tell the story for me, cold. I'll never have that... but you will. Go for it.
Then, read the books.
Then, read the books.

quote:as great as the show's started out, it'll be tough to top the book as it is w/ any adaptation. The books allow you so much more inside the characters' heads and that's where the character development really shines. Do both
Should I just start to read them and avoid the show? Or watch the show?

Any chance they start to CGI the wolves to make them bigger?
