I'll go off the reservation and say Chase. In a movie where all the other comedic characters were over the top in some way or another, he played it completely deadpan. His understated delivery really played up the sheer ridiculousness of his lines.

I'd go with Wang the Jew.

Easily his best ever performance IMHO.

Only scene that was anywhere near his usual over-the-top slapstick was his date with Lacey. And it actually worked there.

I'd be hard-pressed to name a single funniest character. The whole cast made it work.

There's a 2009 doc about the making of the movie, Caddyshack: The Inside Story, which is worth checking out.

Unfortunately Sarah Holcomb remains an enigma.

Rodney saying "hey Wang I hear this place is restricted so don't tell them you're Jewish" might be my favorite line.

Supposedly all the drugs on the sets of Animal House and Caddyshack were her downfall. She was only 18 or so for Animal House.

*For the longest time I did not realize that was the same girl in the two movies. That accent was a boner killer.

Dangerfield followed by Knight for sure. But I really also love Chevy Chase.

Looking at this first post, such a classic. Such great comedians in this movie!

Knight’s ridiculous laugh cracks me up.

Spaulding is my favorite character

I remember reading that he was pretty pissed with the production. He was the only one not doing blow and partying all night. Old school professional that took his job serious.

That would have to get old if you're a dude like Knight.

Yeah he dropped out of high school early to enlist for World War II and served in the European theater. I’m sure there were several moments where he showed up to shoot and one person opposite to him was hung over and the other was still asleep in their trailer and he thought “I faced bullets to save this?” Lol

I know everyone quotes Bill Murray but "you'll get nothing and like it" is probably the most daily use quotable line in the movie.

Ted Knight and it isn't close IMO

I've sent kids younger than you to the electric chair. Not because I wanted to - I felt like I owed it to them.

Dangerfield (as the comedic heavy) and Knight (as the comedic straight man) owned this movie.

I think it’s Ted Knight. Dangerfield was hilarious, but he’s a one trick pony.

Knight actually gives a great performance and his quotes are just about as good.

This is a hybrid. This is a cross, ah, of Bluegrass, Kentucky Bluegrass, Featherbed Bent, and Northern California Sensemilia. The amazing stuff about this is, that you can play 36 holes on it in the afternoon, take it home and just get stoned to the bejeezus-belt that night on this stuff.

Has to be Bill Murray for me. Every time I've ever set foot on a golf course the Spackler quotes come out. Really, any time you have to swing a club-like sporting instrument. Baseball bat, croquet mallet, polo.

Kige

Knight is the central antagonist for each of the other comedic or straight characters: Chase, Murray, Dangerfield, and Danny. And he's amazing because he's entertaining and substantial while playing the foil for all of them.
