Alright I know it is not a perfect fit, but there are a lot of similarities in the dynamic between the show and characters.

Which one is your favorite?

Joey v. Barney
Chandler v. Marshall
Monica v. Lily

Stretches and probably easy answers:

Rachel v. Robin
Ross v. Ted

Sorry no Phoebs

I don't think this one is a stretch at all. They may be the two whiniest most sensitive male leading characters in sitcom history

Barney > Joey
Chandler > Marshall (close one)
Monica > Lilly

Rachel > Robin (I'd take early season Robin but overall Rachel)
Ted and Ross I say equal

If we're ranking just these characters I go
Barney
Chandler
Marshall
Joey
Monica
Lilly
Rachel
Robin
Ted
Ross

Edited to add Joey

I think I would agree with you, but Joey and Barney are extremely close in my book and I think Ross might be a little less whiny than Ted

Barney runs away with that one and I like Joey a lot

Its a damn shame "Joey" happened but Barney couldnt get a spinoff

Didn't know another man could be any whiner than Ross. Show must suck when he's involved.

I always thought Lily reminded me a lot more of Phoebe than Monica. They're both sort of kooky and nice and innocent and the oddball of the group. Anyway, here are my answers.

Joey v. Barney- Barney hands down
Chandler v. Marshall- Chandler
Monica or Phoebe v. Lily- Lily over Monica, Phoebe over Lily
Rachel v. Robin- Robin
Ross v. Ted- Ross

Barney beats Joey (close because I love sandwiches)

Marshall beats Chandler (slapsgiving gets the edge)

Rachel beats Robin (hotness)

Ross = Ted (coin toss both annoying)

Monica beats Lily beats Phoebe (hotness)

Friends is infinitely more funny than HIMYM on the whole.

Ross is a better character than any character of both shows.

Yeah I'd agree, but I thought the couple dynamic was more important. Especially since I see a lot of people think Lily brings Marshall down and I think Chandler is a little more subdued after he and Monica gets married

Agreed. I hate HIMYM. I used to watch it, but i got sick of Ted's whiny self. That and all of the jokes were repetitive and it just became not funny to me anymore.

I don't hate HIMYM. It is okay, it does what it does. Friends was just one of those special sitcoms that worked. It worked for a long time. And it left us at the right time. All the story lines were money. None were all that loathesome. And the jokes worked and kept showing up over time. The show just worked.
