If we're going simply by the black and white, cut and dry rules, yes they were on a break and Rachel shouldnt' have been mad.
But do feelings not come into play here (man I feel like a sissy typing that out)? Here are 2 people with loads of history that are madly in love with each other, but experience (like almost all couples do) hitting the proverbial wall. When rachel said she wanted a break, I wouldn't have thought she meant "date other people". She said "a break from us", but I took that more to mean "I just need some damn space. Give me some alone time for a week or so". Also, when Ross called and heard Mark over there, he assumed the worse, which was in fact not true. Rachel didn't even want Mark to stay over even though he was just there for support.
So then ross goes out and fricks someone that same night. I try to put myself in their shoes. If I was with someone for years, and had the history they did, and we wanted to "take a break" and my gf fricked some dude that night, I'd be devastated.

How do we know? After she said she wanted "a break from us" Ross walks out and that's that. They didn't define what the hell a break was. It could be like I said above where she just wanted some space because the relationship was getting to her. Or, she could've wanted to go out and bang randoms every night of the week. A "break" is too open ended to just walk out on without setting rules. Just because they were on a "break" does not mean they weren't together.

they clarified it a little when ross calls her from the bar and finds out mark is there. that means they both know.
we also know that rachel understands that they "broke up". at least that is what she tells monich which stuns her so bad she sends blender goo all over the celing.
Like i said, no make up sex = still on a break even though it turned into more of an argument with intentions of getting back together when whe spoke on the phone.

It's close. They always had their ups and down.
Remember when Chandler and Joey convinced Ross to make that list of pros and cons about Rachel and Julie and Rachel found it and broke up with him? That was like right after they started going out. That was early season 2.
So then later Rachel sees that prom video and see that Ross was going to be her knight in shining armor when Chip almost stood her up and she gets back together with him. That was the middle of season 2 (episode 14 out of 24 episodes)
And then they go on a break in season 3 episode 15.
And then last episode of season 3 was the one at the beach, and that was continued in the first episode of season 4, which is where Ross and Rachel got back together....for a very short period of time.
And that's it.
They didn't frick again until they made Emma at the end of season 7.

Ross might the most annoying character of all time in a TV show. It was hard watching that show.
