One of the best shows ever made. I can, and do still watch them to this day and find myself laughing out loud.
That being said, Team Rachel. "On a break" is not a break up and he should've known better.
Always put the shoe on the other foot, say Rachel went out THAT same night the break started and had sex with a guy........

Nope. A break is not as permanent.

And also they were on a break. She had another dude at her apartment.

I was on team whatever broke them up, show was better with them apart and the comedy that ensued.

I was reading an article one time a while ago that argued that the reasons Friends was so successful is because they perfectly executed the Ross-Rachel relationship issue. By having so much tension and drama (and humor) associated with it, it kept audiences engaged, whereas shows that capitulate and just put the characters in a relationship tend to not do as well. I'm not doing a good job articulating their argument. They did a much better job. And I doubt I would ever be able to find that article again.

I don't care what the OP's intention was. I've enjoyed this discussion.

I haven't seen the episode in a while and just going from memory in this thread. But I believe she was on the phone with mark and said that her and ross had their little issue or whatever, and mark said "that's it, I'm coming over". And she was like "no, don't come over" but mark wanted to get it in so he did anyway.
It's not like rachel asked him to come over. And when ross called from the bar, rachel started to be like "maybe this was a mistake let's talk about this" then Ross heard that shithead mark in the background and assumed the worst and slammed the phone down.
I can understand it not looking good from Ross's POV, but Rachel didn't actually do anything wrong aside from saying she wanted "a break", which neither of them actually defined what that is (because ross stormed out afterward).

but she did buzz him in downstairs and open the door when he got upstairs, right?
if she didn't want him there, so could have just not done those things.

as pointed out earlier in the thread, it is clear that Rachel thought it was a break up because she even told Monica that they "kind of broke up instead"

That is true, but it would be pretty cruel for her to say "I know you came all the way over here, but go away I'm not letting you up". Maybe when he was actually there at the door she thought she could use some cheering up.

Good point. But again, when Ross called she clearly showed remorse and had second thoughts about everything. Had mark never opened his mouth, there's a good chance they're back together that night and all is well.
I guess there are points for both sides, but my whole thing goes back to the first post I made in here relating back to how I would feel if I were in rachel's shoes. If my gf banged somebody a few hours after I said to her I wanted to take a break I would be devastated.

agree that they were close to getting back together during the phone call but an argument broke out when mark "accidentally" yells into the phone so ross can hear. they may have been on the verge of getting back together, but they never had make up sex (like ive been saying all along).
So technically, they were still on a break/broken up.

Seriously. That guy was a total prick.
Instead of thanks, obama memes on the internet they should say Thanks, Mark.

that is irrelevant. Rachel's feelings make what ross did shitty, but it does not negate the fact that they were still on a break.
The same would apply to the situation you described. If your girl went out and banged some rando after you dumped her, it would suck and be shitty of her, but she has every right to do so because you dumped her.

Plus we are talking about the exact same guy that Rachel knew that Ross was jealous about (because Ross knew what Mark's game was).
Was Ross being a jealous, needy wuss about Rachel's relationship with the guy before the break, sure. But she knew what kind of guy Ross was before she started dating him, so she shouldn't have been surprised at his jealousy. And it was obvious that Mark was trying to get in her pants, and Rachel shouldn't have been that nieve about it. And if she truly only wanted some space and not breakup with Ross, she shouldn't have let the one guy that Ross knew was trying to get in her pants into her apartment on the day she wanted the break. Knowing how Ross's character was, she was just begging him to do something stupid. She's luck the whiney wuss didn't jump off a building when he found out Mark was over there.

I love the part in one episode where Ross asks Joey in front of Rachel, "Hey Joey, are men ever nice to strange women for no reason?" And Joey replies, "No, only for sex."

in real life if Rachel was an unattractive obese woman mark would've never initiated conversation with her at the diner monica worked and told her about the job FACT. Rachel was ridiculously naïve
