I was disappointed with how Vikings Valhalla ended. I was hoping for one more season ending with the Battle of Stamford Bridge and the Normans landing in Britain. Will definitely watch this.

Nikolaj should have committed to the Normand haircut.

I’m sure you love that BBC, Corinthians. It’s always got an eye on you.

Matilda refused William on the basis that he was a bastard. Supposedly, one day when Matilda was enjoying a mass she was dragged and beaten in the streets by William for refusing the marriage. After a few days bedridden with wounds, she changed her mind and declared that she would marry no-one but William.

The events of 1066 are some of my favorite in history so I’m hopeful BBC does it justice.
We have a primary source via the Bayeux tapestry of dress, armor, etc. of the era. They used the kite shields, but I’m a bit bummed they went with the Vikings/Last Kingdom drab clothes and weird leather armory look. Also, no stache on the actor playing my dude Harold Godwinson!?
The whole situation with Harold going to Normandy is odd and there’s conflicting motivations at play. On paper, he went to release his relatives from captivity but could’ve been sent by Edward to reaffirm his promise of the crown to William from 15 years prior. While he was there he did fight with William and was knighted. He also gave his oath to William, probably under duress as he was essentially a hostage.
Edward really did England no favors if he indeed intended for William to inherit the crown as it wasn’t his right to grant it in the first place. While the King’s closest male relative was typically elected by the Witan, true primogeniture wasn’t in place and the crown certainly couldn’t be handed to whomever the King chose.

As far as I know they were never allies.

he was usurped and had a red hot poker rammed up his arse
Yes he was usurped but the hot poker story did not come about till centuries later and historians of the era say it is not proven. His death is a mystery but clearly was murdered and was in fact a shitty king

I noticed this too. Always the same ugly clothing. Always weird and useless armor.

Saw this the other day and looked intriguing. Saw it had been posted before so wanted to update the thread. Gives off GOT vibes with the history element. Trailer has me pumped.

I can see the writers room stressing over the all white male cast lol. Add the black knight and woman who can defeat 15 men…all breathe sigh of relief.

It’s a picture of the Bayeux Tapestry, a famous depiction of the Norman Conquest. That particular section is of the Battle of Hastings. If you search google you will see other paintings of William, but it makes sense why the embroidery is used for the Wikipedia article.
Had an opportunity to view this in person back in 2019. Pretty awesome looking at something that old and knowing that it was a big part of their storytelling back then. Even more impressive they wove it all in one piece.

Timely. Was just saying in The Last Kingdom thread I'd like more of this story.

Also to be fair, Edward II is far from the only gay king in English history. William II, Richard II, James I all were at one point accused or were known to have male favorites who were likely lovers.

I’m veryinterested in the subject, but Walking with Dinosaurs is sometimes a little too cute, imo.

It’s a shame that some men—most men—just were not cut out to be a medieval king. It was not a job for nice guys. Edward II was probably one of the more pleasant kings on a personal level, if you had to hang out with one.

That was Edward II about 200 years after this
his dad threw one of his best military advisors (trained in the arts of war) out of a window to his death. tragic, really.
