What is everyone's opinion of how it ended? i'm not sure what to think about it. One of those endings where everyone has their own theory.

It was a great series though and i'm kind of sad to end it but I will make my way through The Wire next.

You should search for past threads on this topic. We all have different opinions.

It definitely holds up..the tension of the finale scene was simply amazing.

But.... is he dead?

I hated it when I saw it live. I was also one of those idiots that thought the cable went out for a few seconds until I saw the credits roll.

Tony was obviously killed. As time went on I've accepted it as a good ending. However if I was writing the ending, the last scene would have taken place after Tony is killed with Paulie ascending to boss of the scattered remnants of the family.

I always viewed it as, he may not have died right there, but with the life he chose it will happen one day and he'll never see it coming, everything will just fade to black.

Dead. There's no other acceptable answer.

I hated the ending for a while but gradually realized it was probably the best and most honest way to end something like that.

David Chase disagrees.

quote:

“I had been talking with Chase for a few years when I finally asked him whether Tony was dead. We were in a tiny coffee shop, when, in the middle of a low-key chat about a writing problem I was having, I popped the question. Chase startled me by turning toward me and saying with sudden, explosive anger, ‘Why are we talking about this?’ I answered, ‘I’m just curious.’ And then, for whatever reason, he told me He shook his head ‘no.’ And he said simply, ‘No he isn’t.'”

Don't care what he said. He's admitted before that he's sick and tired of answering about it so I don't really trust his answer years later. Further, if he didn't want me thinking Tony was whacked, he shouldn't have ended the show the way he did.

He's dead, but people who get hung up on this are completely missing the point.

My main beef today is the people who freak out over folks not liking the ending.

Not trying to be a dick, but I suggest researching Chase's statements on the subject over the years. He's changed what he's said multiple times. In the beginning his primary aim was fostering ambiguity. He reveled in the mystery. Now, he's mostly just sick of being asked about it so he'll say things to piss people off.

Chase goes back and forth on whether or not Tony died depending on who he's talking to and what side of the bed he woke up on.

No that it really matters. There are only two outcomes - either he died right then, or the implication is that he lives a short while longer in total paranoia and eventually dies without seeing it coming. Regardless, he doesn't ever change his ways, he doesn't get out, he doesn't die old and contented.

If Tony isn't dead that last scene is pure trash
