The first time I saw it about ten years ago I did not like it but after learning about Hunter S. Thompson this movie, book and man is a genius.

What made the movie better?

Don't stop here man! It's bat country!

I loved this movie when I was a teenager and the drugs were cool but now I think it's boring as hell.

If you are enjoying learning about the man I highly recommend the book Gonzo: The Life of Hunter S Thompson. Really enjoyable read. They also have a movie of the same name that covers some of the things in the book with less detail.

“There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.”

From the book...
"We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, and a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers... and also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of Budweiser, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.
The only thing that really worried me was the ether. There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. And I knew we'd get into that rotten stuff pretty soon. Probably at the next gas station."

Horrible move, great book.

I preferred "Where the Buffalo Roam" with Bill Murray playing Thompson

I really enjoyed that one too. If anyone is looking for other movies about Thompson, The Rum Diary is terrible.
Edit: I looked it up and was mistaken, it was written by Thompson but only based on his experiences.

But mostly the drugs.

Absolutely. I've seen that movie on just about every drug imaginable back in my party days. Loved it every time.

This movie is the single most influential reason I never seriously considered doing drugs.

You have to do a shitload of stuff to see and/or do what you see in that movie. I used to stay fricked up for days and never saw anything close to that.

Throw the radio in the tub when the white rabbit peaks.

Both Murray and Depp lost themselves in the role. Murray’s friends said he was insufferable during his Thompson phase.

Thompson himself was an insufferable prick. I saw him twice and the second time I was saying to myself "Why the frick did I think he was going to be any less of an a-hole this time?"
I stil enjoy his writing despite that.
