Just got back from seeing it, it was okay (biopics aren't my thing).

A bit of the cinematography was too quirky/artsy (Baz is known for this though) and I felt the rap inclusions (one song in the early/mid point and then the rap overdub of In The Ghetto as the credits rolled) were way out of place.

Austin Butler did an absolutely magnificent job as Elvis, really nailing his off-stage mannerisms but especially his on-stage energy.

I knew that Parker had a ridiculously lop-sided contract with Elvis but never knew about his gambling issue nor Elvis' friendship with BB King.

Overall, not bad for a slow, rainy afternoon.

The wife and I just got out the movie we absolutely loved it. The young man that played Elvis was excellent and so was Tom Hanks. Both of our mom’s loved Elvis growing up so I do have a weak spot for the King. Almost 3 hours long and we didn’t even notice

I remember the day Elvis died and I was only 4 years old. My mom came running out the house boo hoo crying and then myself and my twin brother started crying with her even though we didn’t know the reason

Everyone in this thread needs to look up some fact vs fiction concerning this movie. It takes a lot of liberties.

I thought it was a great movie. Austin really nailed his part, especially the on stage persona. I’m not surprised that it is getting mixed reviews. Loved it though.

Very true. I forgot to mention that. The beginning had me reclining my seat and settling for a nap, but the middle hooked me and that was it.

Very early memory for me. I was playing in the yard and came in to my mom crying and trying to cover up that she was crying. Spent the afternoon on the phone with her friends and sisters who were fans too.

Is it wrong? Was the leather and Elvis songs all part of the plan?

About 95% made up.

It was supposed to be a Christmas show in the sense that it would air in December, and Parker wanted it to be a family show with Elvis as a ‘60s-era Bing Crosby or Perry Como. But there was never a Christmas sweater or a fairy-tale Christmas set. That’s Luhrmann being the showman. Parker was ticked that there was initially no Christmas music, though, and (TV producer) Steve Binder and Elvis threw him “Blue Christmas” as a bone.

The start was too chaotic for me. Just the way it was shot. Felt like a cartoon and musical at times. With Hanks narrating as the Colonel. The middle and end make up,for it. Did not know that the 68 Christmas special was supposed to be a sweater wearing fireplace cheese fest. Old carols etc and he turned it into something else. Wonder how true that was? The editing of the end was perfect IMO.

Just saw it and agree with your sentiments. Chaotic is the perfect word to describe the beginning, but it pivoted into an incredible movie. Austin Butler gave a masterful performance, and this is coming from someone who thinks that Elvis Presley was the greatest performer ever. The guy nailed the role.

Maybe a spoiler…

The way the Unchained Meldody scene morphed from the actor singing to the actual Elvis performance was amazing.

Oh, and Tom Hanks was really good playing the POS Col Parker.

well done
way too overly stylized for my taste
Austin Butler is Taylor Kitsch 2.0 that can act, looks just like him
they REALLY glossed over Scilla in Germany, she was 14
hanks was great as the colonel
would love to see a memphis mafia series on hbo
the music was great except for the rap BS injected into his songs

Hmm, have never given it much thought, but you might be on to something w a Memphis Mafia series. I can only imagine the bizarre lives those guys lived catering to Elvis’ every need.

As for the Elvis songs/rap, I just think of it as a circle, of sorts. Undeniably, Elvis’ sound was “borrowed” from black music and the rap renditions of Elvis’ music was a nod to the black roots of his music.

The wife and I (no pics) saw it last night. Long movie, but didn’t really feel that way quite honestly. First half of the movie was good, but had ALOT going on. Slowed down a good bit when the ‘68 special came around, which in my opinion is when the movie got really good. I’ve always been a huge Elvis fan. When I say Austin Butler WAS Elvis 2.0, I mean it. Absolutely AMAZING performance by Butler! That dude became Elvis right in front of everyone’s eyes. Overall, I really enjoyed it.

saw it yesterday.

didn't realize it was such a long movie.

the colonel is a greedy fat piece of shite.

but, even his father let him down. no way i'm letting them inject some shite into my son just to get him on stage.

other than his mom, Pricilla may have been the only one who actually cared about him. everyone else were just leeches.

Wife said the same thing. Uncanny how much he looked like Elvis even at that scene when he was older and heavier.

The first act was pretty terrible with the rap overlay and cheesy aspects, but the middle and end were great.

I am curious if they oversold Elvis’s ties to the African-American community a bit. They basically portrayed him as a civil rights icon who got almost all of his inspiration from there. Not saying it’s not possible, but I hadn’t heard that before.
