It really sounds like they were just lightheartedly saying they had to have a white guy in their all black movie in the 80s. I don't think they were race baiting or anything. It's no different than saying yeah we had to have a black actor in 8 Mile

Is this Christopher Moltisanti if he grew up as a frat star and not a wiseguy?

I love how Eddie Murphy was in whiteface (Jewface?) for this movie and literally nobody gives a shite. But if it were a white person in blackface people would want it cancelled and never watched again.
And another reason nobody cares? Because it was funny, and that's all it was supposed to be, and that's all people should care about.

Do you even Tropic Thunder bro?

They spent damn near the whole movie making fun of American black culture, so... who the frick cares?
Which might be WHY they wanted it to be entirely black. It's true, keeping Louie in the role he was in worked out, but imagine if any of the jokes on African-American culture was said by a white guy?
It's clear Eddie wanted to poke fun at what he knew best, and the movie is a clear testament to that. Keeping the cast black means black people making jokes about black people.

There are token white guys in a lot of black movies. Undercover Brother, Barbershop, Soul Plane, Death at a Funeral, etc., etc. It's a common Hollywood trope.

Right, if that movie was made today it would be blasted and cancelled. Hell, it may eventually become that anyway.

They aren't saying they didn't want him in it. They are saying they didn't plan on casting any white people but Paramount freaked out at the idea of a wide release movie not having one and made them cast a white person. Since they liked Anderson's work they hired him.
Considering nearly 80% of their potential audience at that time would be white, not to mention the demographic group that generally produced almost all of the revenue for the studios, I can understand why they would be concerned an all black cast might not make money.
However, what they found is that "funny is funny", regardless of skin color. Though it is a mostly black cast dealing with mostly black culture, the movie is absolutely hysterical...to ALL races. THAT is how you break down prejudices. By changing opinions through merit and ability. Not by doing what studios want to do today. Which is forcing "diversity" in casts SOLEY for the sake of diversity rather than ability. That's how we get garbage like the Ghostbusters remake nobody wanted whereas if you let talent just blossom organically you don't have to force diversity (see Bridesmaids. An almost all female cast dealing with primarily female issues, but a movie that is still funny to all genders)

Calling him the funniest white guy around is pretty high praise of him.
Seriously. The fact that they had to pick a white comedian/actor, and out of all of the working white guys, they picked Louie, that's not a small amount of praise.

They had Randolph and Mortimer in it.

He was in the first one.
"Hey, I started out mopping the floor just like you guys. But now... now I'm washing lettuce. Soon I'll be on fries; then the grill. In a year or two, I'll make assistant manager, and that's when the big bucks start rolling in."
More joke than story. Hope he's made it to Asst. Mgr.

You’re missing the point PsychTiger, but that most likely is your intent.

Yeah it was Queens. I'm dumb.
I think I must have had Harlem Nights in my head when I wrote that.

I'd love for Paramount to explain why they insisted on a white actor.
Maybe they should have let Samuel L Jackson and Louie Anderson switch roles.

As a 43 year old white man, I honestly could not give one single frick about this story from almost 40 years ago. "Coming to America" is one of the greatest comedy movies, ever.
