But isn’t Shai-Halud a Fremen name?

The name is Arabic. It means "thing of eternity." It is only "Fremen" in that it stems from a language they use. It would be like saying "Allah" is Egyptian. It's really just a Muslim word more than its Egyptian, Lebanese, Syrian, etc.

quote:

They named the worm this so why is the princess talking about the Fremen and Shai-Halud on Dune?

It's more of a word referencing God for them. The worms are a manifestation of Shai Hulud, so that's why they call them that. Shai Hulud is a physical manifestation of God, not necessarily multiple worm Gods themselves. That being said, I do not think that it is proper for the princess to be referencing those things at this point in the timeline. Could you make an argument that the Zensunni currently refer to Shai Hulud at the time of the show? Maybe. But that is some serious deep dive crackpot hardcore Dune lore. There's no way they intended for that. It's almost certainly a mistake in understanding the timeline.

Ok but in one of the first scenes of EP1 when discussing the fleet Duke medium well tells the Emperor he has harvesters that are Fremen proof.

Yep. As far as I understand it, you're right. I know they fled the machine wars, but I thought it took them thousands of years to get to Arrakis. Hell, they were slaves on Salusa Secundus for a while before that. Admittedly, the timeline for their exodus is super murky, but from what I know, there's just no feasible way that Fremen could exist on Arrakis at this time.

r/Dune is chock full of the nerdiest Dune people to exist. I would take a look at their reaction threads and see if there is any explanation. I plan on doing that, because you bring up a great point. Unless my memory is just totally fricked, but I don't think that is the case here (surprisingly).

If the show widens the audience I’m overjoyed for it. There can’t be enough Dune on TV and it’s so big there practically can’t be enough but for me, as a fan I feel cheated because this is just a mess.

I’m fairly certain we’re remembering the year correctly.

You have to admit that the agony scene was perfectly done.

I'll wait for the show to complete before I come to any forceful conclusions.

I'll eat up anything dune.

Also.... Frank is dead. No one can write like him.... Chill out

Yea no desire to see those weirdo opinions

Ive watched both eps and enjoying it. However I completely agree they're so heavy handed with the non stop emotional female dialogue nonsense.

Wasn't the biggest fan of EP2.

The Dune Euphoria vibe is just annoying to me. I'm in full support of nice titties, I'm a big fan. But just long sex scenes in Dune just feels off. It's not what I'm wanting from a Dune show but that is HBO for you. I know in some of the later books that I never read the sex stuff supposedly gets pretty weird but this is trying to tie into the same universe as Villeneuve and it just misses the same feel of the movies.

The "this is a chick show" type hate I don't really get. I mean, if you watched the previews then you should have known what this show was going to be.

Eh I think the vibe the BG give off in Dennis' adaptations versus the vibe here is just night/day different. I guess you can write it off to its 10k years sooner and they havent fully established themselves as the baddes bitches in the universe.

Heretics and Chapterhouse went deep into sex. The books shotgunned the story, the stories weren't tight, and too much was not explained.

The BG knew when Paul arrived it should not use its powers to rule. See Jessica's argument with Hawat when she immobilized him. They probably had not learned this lesson when Prophecy takes place.

At first I was thinking along the same lines. It seemed they were trying to build a sensitive genuine relationship between these two with gratuitous sex (though don't get me wrong, I liked those tits as well). But then it's revealed that everything that idiot son of the Emperor said was reported back to her daddy, and all that blah-blah-blah about being the ignored useless daughter of a distant Duke was utter nonsense. Hell, her father probably set her up and ordered her to pump him for information.

This would be very consistent with Frank Herbert's Dune universe.

Yea I mean it's not a big deal and I kind of saw her being a rat from the get go. I guess it's the drugs too. Like just some young people snorting sand cocaine. This is just more of a personal thing, just because I don't want the Dune universe to feel like real life/typical HBO sex and drugs scenes.

Yeah I thought it was obvious she was screwing him and giving him that dune cocaine to talk. He talks about being useless if he takes another bump and she makes a comment about not being totally useless, figured he was gonna be talking to her like a coked up out of his mind person in the kitchen at 4am.

Travis Fimmel is pretty bad in this. Not as bad as he was in Raised By Wolves, but it's close.

Reminds me of the same character a bit. Honestly I kind of wasnt paying attention much in episode 2. Just couldn't hold my attention.

Put it this way - the two actors playing the humanoid robots were more believable.

I really liked everyone in Raised By Wolves. He plays an insane religious zealot well IMO.

I love The Last of the Mohicans. Anything with Daniel Day Lewis in it is going to be good. He is an actor's actor.

I'm ready for episode 3, have some stuff planned so will probably be late watching it. It sucks they don't release these things at midnight but it does help discussion.
