I'm wondering if the writers couldn't agree to the direction of the show and have rushed the plot into some poor corners.

I agree with this.

And Anna/Bates thing is so forced to induce some heavy drama in a couple that is drama-less.

I disagree about Mary. She's not a teenager anymore and has a child and estate responsibility. I kinda like what they're doing with her. And that she didn't just jump into bed with a that Gillingham dude.

This is Downton post - Sybil and Matthew

Downton is full of boring characters and I find myself just hoping Thomas will stir something up. The audience is still fricking depressed about the deaths of Season 3 so they turn to rape to cheer us up.

No shite. I love the show for the period, characters and dialogue but it boils down to a melodrama/soap in a glitzy environment. I understand they had an issue with Dan Stevens wanting to be written off the show but you would think that after Mathew died almost inconceivably that they would have some uplifting relief to even out the tone. One of the nicest characters, Anna, getting raped out of the blue was not exactly what I had in mind.

I wonder when Mary is going to have anything at all to do with her child. I don't even recall a mention of the child in this last episode. Mary is consumed with managing the estate now. It was strange that there was no mention of the child. I assume a nanny was hired, but did I miss that?

No, they alluded to a nanny, but never showed her, or her being hired.

And I guess that was how it was back then, for the rich. But you're right, she hasn't been doting on the baby, that's for sure.
Though they touched on that in the 1st episode about her being in mourning. They've only shown her holding her baby once.
About the same as Tom and Sybie.

The "wicked little cross breed" episode was the only one i remember even seeing a nanny. Although she may have been around without being noticed.

I thought they were going to play up the lack of bond between Mary and the boy when it came up in the first episode, but it doesn't look that way which is fine. I think that would be boring at this point in the baby's life.

I'm not chomping at the bit for the next episode or any of the current storylines. Edith and the married guy are boring as hell.

What year are we in? Edith's guy is becoming a German citizen, but we're between wars now.

1922 I think.

And, if you looked closely last episode you saw the 2 babies.
Albeit, 2 women pushing their strollers as Mary and Tom left in the car to go to York.

I laughed and wondered that myself and I also wondered how graphic the book was in that day and time.

Probably a bunch of old wives tales.

nothing is over and done with.

I'm glad they didn't so the whole "oh no i'm pregnant and i don't know if the rapist is the father" plot line, that's been done to death.

The Dowager and the Crawley woman feud should be fun.

Yeah, I'm kind of expecting/fearing that the season will end with Bates killing the other guy. They've lost focus of the core of the show, the changing times. Instead of being the focus of the show it's become the running joke of the show. Don't get me wrong, I still laugh at Mr. Carson and Miss Patmore freaking out about the new ways, but the changing times used to be what created the drama, not contrived soap opera story lines.

Another somewhat disappointing episode except for the Dowager and Mrs. Crawley. I think I could watch a show about the Dowager herself. She's terrific.

I'm glad Anna and Bates are moving back in together and I really hope they put that to bed. I've got no interest in a pregnancy or Bates going after the rapist and all the drama that could go with that. Other than that storyline, I have no idea where anything else is headed. There was no point to most of the show. Seems Mary will be upset over the impending marriage of her suitor, but there wasn't enough about it to indicate much of anything. I was bored. That makes me sad.

hopely the thomas/baxter collaboration brings some fun to the show.

Looks like some medical news for Edith.

Seems like they tried to push tom's character into the role Matthew was going to play. another younger guy who thinks he knows more about how downton should be run.

Every week this show descends further into soap land. About half way through the episode I yelled at the TV to get the Anna thing moving. We had spent an hour and a half of run time and literally the exact same thing was happening with Anna moping and Bates pressuring her. And my God was the ending cheesy. The horror music playing while Bates said it wasn't over.

I'm really disappointed in this show. Someone said how they aren't using the changing times anymore and I feel the same way. It's starting to feel like after the writers had to kill off Sybil and Matthew they pretty much just mailed it in and basically said frick it they screwed us over so we're gonna be lazy now and think of nothing new. Oh well it was good while it lasted.
