I almost wrote that I hoped we would see much more of her this season. I love her character.

I really didn't like the storyline with Anna. Ticked me off that they are going in that direction. It definitely makes it a bit soap opera-ish, moreso that it was, certainly. Not as happy with the season start as I thought I would be.

The most likable characters are dead

This is Downton post - Sybil and Matthew

Downton is full of boring characters and I find myself just hoping Thomas will stir something up. The audience is still fricking depressed about the deaths of Season 3 so they turn to rape to cheer us up.

They honestly should've written Anna and Bates out. Their storyline has been tapped and those two have been through enough.

I like the potential story about the changing times that it appeared they might be getting into. Robert and Carson are still stuck in a different era while the world is going to pass them by.

One thing I really wish they would have done more of through the years is developed Cora's family. Would have enjoyed more American vs. Brit battles.

Nice catch, they needed something fresh to at least lighten the mood. I just don't know how much more I can take? It's horrible when you loved a show and then you end up becoming a cynical viewer.

I guess the question still remains, what should have they have done about Mathews character?

Definitely not what they did. It still infuriates me when I think about how lazy the writing was to write him off. I understand Stevens put them in a terrible position. I think they were half way through filming the season and it was a totally unexpected announcement if I'm remembering correctly. Still, though they could have done almost anything that would have been better than killing him in that type of car crash.

I think Dan Stevens pissed off the entire cast and crew though with all of that, so I feel kind of bad for the writers in the same way. That really has to suck. Especially since you had already killed another great character in the same season.

The problem is that there is only one writer. He was pretty much handcuffed in having to get rid of Matthew on short notice. I read an article in EW about it, previewing this season. The writer said that they already had scripts and had filmed a few episodes, and after the sad episode where Sybil dies, that he didn't want another doom and gloom episode, and decided to go in the direction of a happy episode, with the family dancing and enjoying their trip, with the twist at the end.

Still don't like the Anna/Bates storyline. Seems desperate. Was an okay episode. So far, this season doesn't measure up at all. I'm disappointed.

Agree.
Something seems 'off'.

Maybe 'forced' is a better word. And rehashed, like Edna coming back to get with Tom, Thomas doing his scheming again...

And Violet doesn't seem to have the good lines as she used to. Those zingers that were so well done in previous seasons.

I'm wondering if the writers couldn't agree to the direction of the show and have rushed the plot into some poor corners.

I think Anna/Bates should have ridden off into the sunset a long time ago. Bates had his moment of drama with his ex-wife and his prison stay. Anna was the sweet, innocent girl who deserves more than to just be a servant. Maybe they could have had Bates come into a bunch of money somehow and have them leave.

Matthew to me was pretty boring, honestly. I'm kind of glad his character is dead. But I think it would have been more interesting to see Lady Mary evolve to a more "1920s flapper" type of character. With Sybil gone, we lost the rebellious young girl who is signaling the change in culture. Instead, they forced Lady Mary to not only remain the dry bread that she was, but also to turn into a leader of the estate thus solidifying her as a future female Robert with a heavy dose of Carson. I wish they would have explored her character delving into jazz and America and given her the new role of rebellious teenager.

They also need to go ahead and get the Carson/Mrs. Hughes love story going.
