Hottest one on the show, I'll let it slide.

No kidding. With Sybil gone, someone has to play the role of the hot girl. Anna's cute, but she's not the hot girl.

I'm not knocking any of the actresses on the show, but I did find it odd that Anna is much more attractive than Lady Mary. Seems like they wouldn't have cast someone more attractive than the person they were being a maid for.
And I read a magazine article that mentioned the missing characters. Something about, in England, the agents are less likely to let their clients be on contract for more than 2-3 seasons of a show. The guy that played Matthew Crawley wanted out at the end of his, but didn't tell the writer that until the season was almost up. It said that they could have either gone with another gloomy episode like when Sybil died, or have a happy one and just throw the twist in at the end, so they did that. And O'Brien wanted out as well, so they just let her take the job in Ireland. I guess she could come back later, but doubtful.
Also, we watched seasons 1-2 on DVD last year in about 2 weeks. We streamed season 3 over about 3-4 nights. Waiting week to week will stink, but that's what we're going to do this time.

I start speaking in a british accent (in my head) as I opened this and read a few entries. :)
Just started yesterday and I am in season 2/ep 3. I'll probably catch up by next Sunday.
Carry on

Crikey, mates. There ARE some slight season 4 spoilers in this thread. Nothing major, but the OP might wish to alter the title to include spoilers.

Thought it was a solid start but the reviews are trashing it. Thomas needs to remember what the Bates did for him. Looks like Daisy may end up her fellow but does she really want him this way? I like Branson's new kick- arse confidence.

He is such a POS I sort of pull for him.

Pretty slow start to the season so far. The rape scene last night was tough to watch.

Yeah was not expecting that.
I really didn't like it either. Way too out of left field. They didn't set up the guy as being a scumbag at all. He was just being your typical young, servant flirt and then suddenly BAM - "frick you Anna, here's what it's like to have real fun ::slap, slam, rape::"
I really like Lady Edith's new guy though. Though they just introduced his ability to card sharp and card sharp. So I'm sure we'll see that he's trying to scoop the estate out from Robert.

I completely agree. But if we are being completely honest about Downton, it is a glorified, expensive Soap Opera. Many of the story lines in the show are pretty forced and contrived. I mainly enjoy the show for the characters, the period piece aspect (sets, costumes, culture), and Maggie Smith. I have never thought it was very well written.

how much would 30 pounds convert to in dollars in the 1920's?

What would they show us, that he raped another maid first? Charming rapist can be his primary flaw, he doesn't have to kick puppies and eat babies too. I also think they tried to imply that this happened somewhat frequently back then, Anna didn't even have to tell Mrs. Hughes what happened, she immediately understood.
This is obviously going to be a major plot point this season because he's the servant of Lady Mary's new boyfriend.

30 GBP in 1920 = 1135 GBP today = $1865 today

so, I'm assuming this would have been a lot of money in the 20's? They made it sound like he was rich after getting the 30 lbs.

I think they glossed over a few things that are probably common knowledge to most Brits. We happily live in debt today, but back then in England they had things like debtor's prison and those work houses they saved Mr. Carson's friend from. Getting out of debt was probably a big deal.

will it take the same turn as every other soap and have anna end up pregnant?

I agree, that part wasn't done very well. Obviously the season is going to pivot off this event but the way it was done IDK? Something was really off about that scene.

I really didn't like the storyline with Anna. Ticked me off that they are going in that direction. It definitely makes it a bit soap opera-ish, moreso that it was, certainly. Not as happy with the season start as I thought I would be.

The Dowager adds a nice touch of humor.
