DOJ Moves to end movie theatre anti-trust rules

Hello being able to stream "first run" movies in your home the day they come out.
IMO, that's what the theatres are really upset about.
Should be a good issue to keep an eye on.

The US Justice Department signaled Monday that it plans to end a 71-year-old antitrust enforcement program on movie distribution, saying it is no longer needed to protect consumers.
quote:
Since the decrees were enacted, the movie industry has become more competitive, with major metropolitan areas served by multiple theaters and video streaming services dramatically altering the landscape for consumers, Delrahim said in a speech at a Washington legal conference.
quote:
Once innovation has occurred, however, it would be a mistake for antitrust enforcers to limit the potential for consumer-enhancing innovation.”
The shift is likely to upset small and medium-sized theater chains and drive-ins, which balked at a potential change when the DOJ launched a review of the decrees in 2018.
The National Association of Theatre Owners (NATO) argued in October 2018 public comments that the restriction on block booking remained essential to protect smaller theaters, which may otherwise be forced to accept films that won’t play well in their communities.

Movie theaters haven’t had a bad enough decade, the DOJ argued.

Other human beings ruin the theater experience. I'll never understand people paying to go into a theater to act like a jackass.

I can't tell you how many movies over the course of the year I would never go to see in theaters that I would happily screen from home on opening night for the equivalent price of a movie ticket.

The market tends to correct itself anyway. Look at Alamo Drafthouse.
As another poster said, other people really ruin the experience (coincidentally, they can also be the best part of it. SO FRUSTRATING!) to say nothing of the operators who charge crazy prices for stale popcorn. I digress of course as all of this has been rehashed ad nausea.
What I am hopeful for is the thrill of seeing these movies as they come out on my terms. That's what the market is gravitating towards and I hope to see that soon. Hell, im not going to see TROS in theaters but if I could watch it in my home the day it came out? Pfft. Id pay the $40 just to be able to bitch and moan about how awful it was here.

I like the way they run Alamo, but I hate watching movies in dine in theaters
Always sit next to someone who wants 6 appetizers and a vodka soda every 20 minutes so I have to pull my feet back every time the waitress has to come over during the damn climax of the movie

Thank God the DOJ is cracking down on the scourge of independent movies' market dominance. In the wake of Disney pulling all old Fox films from second run theaters, this move will in no way help consumers. You can even see why Disney wants it, to further control the pipe.

I’m fine with that. Most stuff I get to watch these days is watched with a large family so even paying $40 for the stream would be saving money.

Exactly. They would charge a premium and it would absolutely be worth it imo. Pretty much whatever they charged.

I spent 70 dollars for my fam to see Endgame after snacks and drinks at the Place in Hammond with the recliners.
50 bucks would be great for streaming opening night movies. I even have surround sound.

I still enjoy seeing a movie in the theater. No home theater system really can compete. Plus if the audience is well behaved there’s something nice about the shared experience.

Literally nothing prohibits that from happening now legally, and this ruling doesn’t have anything to do with that anyway.
It’s more about allowing studios own theaters again
Reason why some theatres don’t want it is because not only can they be strong armed from competitors supported by the deep pockets of Hollywood, they can now be forced to air blocks of movies to get access to the one movie they want.
Would be severely damaging to many niche theatres.
So if you want everything to be a corporate metroplex, then celebrate this.
Because this doesn’t really fundamentally change anything.

That's insane. I spent $5 to see the same exact movie.

I go to a movie theater to see movies on a huge screen with a badass sound system. I have a relatively nice home system but I and most others will never be able to afford anything that comes close to something like a Dolby cinema @ AMC
