Disney’s Streaming Service Starts to Come Into Focus
quote:
How much will subscriptions cost? Disney has given hints but no specifics.

A live-action “Star Wars” series coming to the platform from Jon Favreau, the director of films like “Iron Man” and “The Jungle Book,” is expected to cost roughly $100 million for 10 episodes.
quote:
Original movies will include “Timmy Failure,” which has a $45 million budget and is based on the best-selling books about a comically self-confident boy detective. Tom McCarthy, the Oscar-winning “Spotlight” filmmaker, is directing the adaptation..
quote:
Starting with “Captain Marvel” in March, all of the films that Walt Disney Studios releases in theaters will subsequently flow to the Disney streaming platform instead of to Netflix. (There are “no current plans” to move Marvel-themed television shows off Netflix, a Disney spokeswoman said.)
quote:
At least nine movies are in production or advanced development, with budgets ranging from $20 million to $60 million. Disney is remaking two musicals from its animation library as live-action films: “Lady and the Tramp” (1955) and “The Sword in the Stone” (1963). Other films headed to the service include “Togo,” a period adventure about a sled dog, and “Noelle,” starring Anna Kendrick as Santa’s daughter.
Also in the mix are a remake of “Three Men and a Baby,” the 1987 comedy released by Touchstone, a defunct Disney label; “The Paper Magician,” set at a school for magic; “Stargirl,” based on the young-adult novel about a quirky teenager; and a new take on “Don Quixote” from the writer and director Billy Ray.
Most series will cost $25 million to $35 million. Already in the works are episodic spinoffs of Disney franchises like “High School Musical” and “Monsters Inc.” The Muppets will probably be getting a new series. There will be Marvel-themed shows. And Disney recently announced that a new season of the animated series “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” would head to the service.

$19.99 a month is what I'm thinking they'll ask.
It's not like parents can say no.

So Infinity War 1 will be on Netflix, Infinity War 2 will be on Disney Streaming.
And in five years they'll both play nonstop on FX every weekend.

there is no project more important to Robert A. Iger, Disney’s chief executive, than the streaming service. Aimed at families (there will be no R-rated movies), the offering will join ESPN+, Disney’s new sports streaming app, and Hulu, which will come to Disney as part of the Fox deal and focus on older audiences.
So it sounds like Hulu would get first dibs on the R-rated movies and non family friendly shows. I don't know if the Disney service will be a must have unless you have kids or are a huge Star Wars/Marvel fan, but Hulu might beef up it's content enough to get consideration as a must have.

I hope they really open up the catalog and have a lot available.

I’m really not looking forward to having 10 different streaming services.

Yeah, Netflix has finally had a watchable selection of movies since the Disney deal kicked in. It will hurt them when those go, they still can't make a good movie for anything. We watched the new movie with Kristen Bell and Kelsey Grammer this week thinking with those 2 it should at least be decent. It was the equivalent of a Hallmark movie except with A-listers instead of D-listers.

They need to have ESPN join this streaming service as well.
I'd pay $40 to have whatever the stupid disney streaming movie show crap is if they include all of the ESPN's and my local foxsports.

Netflix just added a bunch of A24 movies recently. I'll take that over Marvel and Star Wars any time.

Disney has to sell off the Fox Sports regional channels.

I know the deal was a little weird with Fox sports properties? Did they get any at all? Or did they only get the regional channels?
ETA: Just checked. They're acquiring them but immediately selling them off to pacify any kind of anti competition argument against them.

I'm interested to a) see how much Disney will charge for this. I expect it to be fairly hefty since they know a ton of people will pay regardless of cost. But I imagine it may be reasonable at least in the beginning. And b) if they will employ the "vault strategy" for streaming like they do for their properties on VHS/DVD/BR/etc. It would suck if they did that, but it's been a brilliant strategy for them in the past, and I wonder if they would consider using it here. You would hope/think that Disney streaming would/should allow you access to all of their properties, and that the vault strategy wouldn't really work as well for streaming, but the mouse may think otherwise.

What is the Disney Vault? (Clearly I don't have kids)

Starting in the VHS era, Disney would release films for purchase for a limited time. Then they would take them out of circulation and say that they were in the "Disney Vault".
When a classic movie was released for the first time or a movie was being re-released after being taken off of the market for a few years, they'd market it as "Coming Soon from The Disney Vault!"

$19.99 is high. If they go with that pricepoint, it's going to be a bloodbath among other streaming services in terms of raising pricing and losing memberships.

This will be worth the price of streaming. Favreau is a legit film maker, and with him on board this could be something special

The rumor is that this will be set on Mandalore after the fall of the Empire.
