Did they just not know wtf to do for the last Seinfeld episode?

Plane going down. They almost admit things to each other. Then touch down in Massachusetts. Facing like 100k worth of fines for BS.

crummy ending fit with the show.

The plot only served as a purpose for all of the side characters that the gang has screwed over to come back and get the last laugh. It was a fitting ending.

They had 2 endings:
A really good one with just the main characters
A really shitty one that brought back all the peripheral characters
Jerry Seinfeld said the easy option was the one with all the peripheral characters because even though the story sucked, it made a lot of people happy.

It was a perfect ending for the show and I loathe the mantra that it was terrible or fell flat. For starters, this entire show over 9 years was based on irreverance, "nothing", and nothing too grand. No after school specials, no 'very special episodes', no pointless character marriages just for the hell of it, no "week in hawaii" episodes, etc. So wtf did people want from the finale? Jerry and Elaine to get back together? They sign the deal with NBC and become billionaires and now their lives are changed forever and for their grandkids? That's not seinfeld, like AT ALL. It'd honestly be a slap in the face to the viewer to do something like that.
They got into that conundrum in the most seinfeld-like way possible, both with kramer jumping on the plane and with the gang making fun of the fat guy. Then we get the side charactres all coming back which was a great hat tip to the fans that've bene there and enjoyed all those characters for nine years. And then, the absolute cherry on top...they're sitting in the jail cell talking about the shirt button and george says "haven't we had this conversation before?" It was the first scene of the pilot. Last scene of the show's magical run mirrors the first that started it all. Brilliant! The ending was not only perfect it was perfect-ly Seinfeld.
All the people who say "tHe FiNaLe sUcKeD1!!!" I'd love to hear what would've made it perfect in their eyes.

It’s like nothing happened in the finale

This is a good take. I had no issue with the finale, other than the fact that I would have maybe not done the clip show the week before the finale, and instead done more with all the side characters that they brought back.
One of my favorite things about Seinfeld are the side characters. A clip show and finale mashup featuring the best scenes of each of the side characters would have been better. Instead, the finale briefly breezed through a few of those scenes but otherwise basically just did a montage of them walking into the courtroom.

How do you end something that is about nothing?

The show wasn't really conducive to a big finale.

I enjoyed that they opened and closed the show with the same conversation about the 2nd shirt button being the KEY button.

Yea i always like the full circle finale

Something that Stan Lee (and the creators of his age) understood was, "Don't give the fans what they want." He admitted later in life that it was a mistake to marry Spider-Man and Gwen.
Seinfeld gave every fan one more scene with their favorite side-character, and it resulted in a convoluted mess.

Kinda existential ;-)
It was *almost* "something" when it appeared the plane was going down.

But...did you catch that coincidence at the time?
I didn't realize it till someone reviewed and analyzed the entire episode 20 years later and bought up that same observation.

The same consensus in my circle.

again...what would you have wanted to see on the screen to say "man that was perfect!"? And who says it's convoluted? If the gang was at a restraurant or somethign and all those characters happened to be there that'd be eye rollin, but it worked into the storyline organically as the prosecution was attempting to defame their character.

It sounds like you, and others, seem to primiarly have an issue with the callbacks. If it was a "normal" episode about their trip to NBC stopping off in massachussetts after a legal run-in but there were zero call-back characters woudl you have liked it better?

My only problem with the finale was Babu. frick that guy. Take some responsibility for you actions and choices. Jerry was just trying to help him because he felt sorry for him. It was one of the few times Jerry actually showed empathy. Then he blames Jerry and Elaine for not getting him his mail. Sure, Elaine had Jerry's mail and should've given it to Jerry sooner, but that has nothing to do with Babu. If anything, they should've shifted it somehow to make Babu hate Newman as much as Jerry does.
