The narration is necessary because it’s one of the biggest, if not the biggest, points in the story. His actions almost always contradict his inner monologues and mantra. The only thing he ever follows through on is the act.

I liked it..

I kind of laughed how they made this big deal of Trent Reznor doing the score and it ended up just being the Smiths greatest hits.

Loved hearing all The Smiths songs but this movie was pretty boring

Yea it wasn't what i would call awful, just felt very bland.

A movie about an assasin who has 4 total kills the entire film, and none were actual hits.

I guess its more of a revenge/vendetta movie? We don't know any of these people, and have no connection to any of them, so its very unsympathetic. Felt like a waste of 2 hours

Agreed. The internal monologue was big on trying to convince us that the killer is emotionless, but all of his kills are revenge for an attempted murder (one that aligns with the consequences of the job). And then, adding insult to injury, he spares a guy for no reason.

I think he spared him because he was too high profile of a kill, and unlike his usual contracts, there was a previous trail to him in place. The other kills were under-the-radar players, not leaders in the world of finance.

That was my guess/rationalization anyway.

You don't think the initial contract is for a high profile kill?

I think he spared him because he was the only "innocent" member of the group. It wasn't personal and he had no idea what "tying up the loose ends" meant.

Also the fact that his girlfriend didn't even die was dumb. Dude wasted like 4 people because she has a scar on her head from the job he screwed up.

That entire plot was so odd the more I think about it.

Now the movie is just annoying

I'd say it was extremely underwhelming from Fincher/Fassbender. Frankly, I struggled to finish it.

This makes me irrationally annoyed, lol. This secret organization is supposed to be top notch, but from my pov, it has serious personnel and policy issues.

Guy pays top $$ to have someone killed. Secret organization fails at that objective, and instead of a refund, charges the guy another $250k to clean up the mess it made.

Guy pays xtra $$ and secret organization sends multiple assassins to kill the gf of the not so effective killer. That job is also botched.

Why the gf? Who knows???

I wish the billionaire could sue in court for breach of contract.

Typical Netfix fare, big names but little substance. Totally forgettable movie.

He was high profile but Fassbender had zero connection to him. The high profile guy at the end of the movie was a novice who could've left a ton of breadcrumbs leading to the two levels between him and Fassbender.

That's my thinking anyway. Fassbender got his pound of flesh with the four people between him and "Mr. Big". Once he realized that this guy was acting on advice from others and had no interest to returning to that world, he cut his losses and let him go.

That's my rationalization anyway. It didn't bother me that he let him live. If anything it was a nice surprise to break up the kill/kill/kill/kill thread of the film.

I did my best to avoid this thread before watching and really enjoyed it in the moment. Thought him going silent when the music played in that opening scene would've been a clever touch because he said music drowns out his thoughts and I thought we were listening to his inner monologue during hits.

With that being said, I'd give it a 7 and after thinking about it the movie pisses me off as it could've been so much better as others have said in this thread. Some of it makes no sense why he did what he did. And how did the GF survive? There were two of them and that guy was a monster who was almost impossible to take down. What did the taxi driver do to deserve that death? The assassins sure.

Also, how as an international assassin do you let anyone know where you live?

I mostly agree.

Solid Friday night watch with a couple of beers. Actually, Fincher probably elevates it to a little more interesting. Without him it's a very bland movie, perhaps bad movie. Instead it's a quite good movie on a Netflix scale, but unremarkable on any other.

The more I think about it, the more I think it seems exactly like Fincher and Co. asked Netflix for one of their dime a dozen junk movie concepts to see what he could do with bad source material and this was the result.

Decent
started off slow
Got a little better
He left New Orleans and went to Florida but clearly he was still in New Orleans

Music is good!!!
Trent’s score was definitely overshadowed by The Smiths

he clearly isn't the best assassin. He is breaking his code the entire movie.
