Daniel Day Lewis discussion

I saw a clip of There Will be Blood the other day and I realized I haven't seen anything from him for years. Then I looked at his filmography and realized he's really taken it easy since his peak.
I remember in the late 2000's he was being hailed as one of the greatest actors. Was he just incredibly selective on his projects and doing it for love of the craft?

That's been his MO for basically his entire career and what he's always been known for, right?

He basically retired from acting in 2017 after Phantom Thread but is coming back for his son's film Anemone. I think he is the greatest living actor but seems to be pretty much done now.

In the Name of the Father is incredible.

He retired from acting. Never did a ton of movies to begin with really. He's a theater guy and he's also the most method of method actors. When he takes on a role it likely takes more of a toll on him than it would other actors.

Did a great job in Lincoln.

Day Lewis is incredibly humble and refuses projects because he believe he will be a “disservice” to the director, crew, and audience.
He initially turned down Gangs of New York and Lincoln. Of all people, Leo DiCaprio had to talk him into both.
After he wraps up a shoot he goes off-grid and finds a small job and assimilates into a life out of the spotlight. I believe he was working as a cobbler in Italy when Leo went to convince him once.
Personally, I think he gets so ingrained in his characters from his method acting that he needs time to balance out. Because he is one of the best actors that have ever lived he can be selective.
He’s not fully retired. He’ll be back, when he finds that perfect next project.

Or a comedic version with Paul Giamatti as Leo and Jim Carrey as Daniel Day.

Would definitely watch.
Sort of (not pound for pound) like The Majestic, in which Jim Carrey forgets who he is and settles into small town life.

The film, Anemone, will be directed by the actor’s son, Ronan Day-Lewis, from a script that the pair co-wrote together. Few details about the movie are available, other than it focusing on intergenerational family bonds, especially the dynamics between fathers, sons and brothers.
Daniel Day-Lewis, 67, will star in the film alongside veteran English actors Sean Bean and Samantha Morton. Over the weekend, Bean and Day-Lewis were spotted riding a motorcycle together on a street in Manchester, England, according to the Manchester Evening News.

Probably my favorite actor. TWBB & Gangs were incredible performances.

All the mentioned movies mentioned and his roles were awesome. The most underrated one to me is The Boxer. Thought he was great in that.
Also obviously mention My Left Foot since it wasn't mentioned either just because.
