Critic's Poll: 'Goodfellas' named best movie of the 1990s

“Goodfellas,” Martin Scorsese’s high-wire act of storytelling and visually masterful riff on the gangster genre, has topped our critics and industry poll as the best film of the 1990s. The survey, with 175 people from around the world voting, included directors, actors, producers, festival programmers, and historians. The closest competition to Scorsese’s film in the poll was Quentin Tarantino’s 1994 crime film, “Pulp Fiction,” which finished just 7 votes shy of “Goodfellas,” in second place.
Critics were asked to submit their top 5 movies, unranked, released between January 1st, 1990 and December 31st, 1999. As mentioned, “Pulp Fiction” came in second place, followed by Jonathan Demme’s “The Silence of the Lambs” and Joel Coen’s “Fargo.” Top non-American films included Wong Kar-Wai’s “Chungking Express” (#6) and the late Abbas Kiarostami’s “Close-Up” (#9), while non-fiction leaders were “Paris is Burning” (#31) and “Hoop Dreams” (#32).
Films that seemed to have aged well over time include, most especially, Stanley Kubrick’s final statement, “Eyes Wide Shut.” Released in 1999 to mixed reviews, it seems as though the last opus from the legendary director has gained notoriety over the years, impressively finishing in fifth place in our poll. Also positioning itself strongly was Quentin Tarantino’s “Jackie Brown” (#25) a film originally deemed to be a disappointment when released in the winter of 1997, but which has grown exponentially as a major cult favorite over the years, much like the Coen’s “The Big Lebowski” (#19)

Obligatory “list is shite” post
The top 4 is hard to argue with, but Shawshank didn’t make the top 30???

Goodfellas is in my Top 5 all time favorite movies but best of the 90s? No way.
Forrest Gump, Saving Private Ryan, Jurassic Park, Twister, Schindler’s List, Shawshank, Lion King, Matrix, Toy Story could all arguably be in the Top 10.

Which movie in the '90s was better? Pulp Fiction's really the only film with an argument.

It probably is, but no Shawshank top 10?

Forrest Gump not being top 5 is a joke.

Eyes wide shut and magnolia as top ten is just laughable.
Shawshank, usual suspects, and Miller's Crossing all belong in the top 30 as well

A lot of great movies in the Top 30 but no Terminator 2 is crazy to me.

I mean Goodfellas is a classic rewatch that we lived for years with but after you see The Departed you see holes in Scorcese as this greatest of great Directors.
Fargo is a masterpiece and would be my vote.
Unforgiven would be in the Top 5.
And yes Groundhog Day would be in the Top 10.

There's nothing wrong with Goodfellas but I think other movies are better. Unforgiven is my first pick and arguably the best western ever made.
People just don't respect comedies but I think Groundhog Day and My Cousin Vinny are meaningful and have no significant flaws - they would llikely be ranked in the top ten if they were dramas of the same quality.

Eyes wide shut is great, but I still feel Tom Cruise was a total miscast for the lead role.
