Could something that big jump to light speed?

Through an amazing feat of engineering all waste and exhaust exit through 1 wall rat sized pipe.
Truly one of its best features.

quote:Sure, but then they'd have allowed the rebels time to evacuate their base on Yavin and regroup elsewhere. The Empire assumed that the Death Star was practically invincible and that they had a chance to deal a knockout blow to the rebellion.
So when the Death Star is being attacked by a bunch of small ships on its surface, it could have just jumped to light speed and likely killed them all and got away?

Initially, they did not feel as though the small ships posed any kind of threat. It wasn't until they analyzed what they were doing and were able to see the flaw but Tarkin underestimated their ability to take advantage of it. Ultimately, they would never have run at this point.

It also took a Force user to destroy it. If Like hadn't been there, no one would have made the kill shot.
How many fighters went up at the start of the battle? Only 3 came back...Luke, Wedge, and a Y-wing.

Where are the waste pipes? This doesn't look up to code.
The Empire paid off OSHA.

Rooster could have hit it.

The movies make the death star's weapon seem like a laser but it's actual a giant super soaker that shoots out all the toilet waste in a stream so concentrated that it can destroy planets.

Disney’s new cannon allows for anything. Whatever the plot needs to happen, insert devise, and it can happen.

Just dumped everything into a trash compactor and a monster ate it.

If they follow proper Imperial procedure, they’ll dump their garbage before going to lightspeed…

That isn't how it is supposed to work, despite what was done in Ep. 8.
