I would also say, we no longer get credits at the start of the film. and I actually think that actually does start to bring viewers into the realism of the movie

Movie magic vs. cgi. Also, films now look too clean. The lighting and detail makes everything look fake. It’s like watching a SOV movie from the 2000s versus a film shot on…well, film. There’s a depth of color that is lost on SOV. We are firmly in the digital age now and films are infinitely easier to shoot now and with it comes cheaper results.
But yeah, movie magic is important, but also more difficult and time consuming to execute.

There was a video posted on here years ago that went in-depth into CGI physics and why movies look so stupid now, and it was super interesting.
I assume this one is in a similar vein. I'll check it out today.

1979 - Look at those computer effects. The holograms and stuff are so futuristic.
2025 - Look at those computer effects. I've seen better shite on my MacBook.
The future is now, and we are unimpressed.

The allure of digital editing is too great. I know nothing of either process but the camera angles(?) Or just they way they shoot them or edit for action are getting repetitively annoying. I watched Play date the other day and I actually skipped through some of the car chase

I'll watch later, but I can already answer a few:
Flat, terrible lighting
Lack of on-location shoots
Excessive and worse VFX to fill in production gaps
Horrible costume design (everything is super clean in case they have to do reshoots)

He goes into a bit more depth than that, but one of the key points is modern color grading and lack of deep focus/ wide shots in place of medium close ups with blurred background.
Also talks about modern makeup and lighting, yes, but particularly harps on actors all looking too pretty and no sweat and no reality and depth to their shots. Uses a ton of 60s and 70s and 80s shots. Tarkovsky. Lean. Friedkin. Speilberg. Malick. Etc.
Doesn't blame it all on digital cameras. Uses Chivo shots as examples of modern depth and realism.

I’ve always thought the contrast between the LOTR movies and the Hobbit movies was a good example of the change.
LOTR had so many gorgeous practical effects, and rarely used CGI for up close shots. Each orc you see in frame looks unique because each was a unique actor in unique makeup wearing unique armor.
Contrast it to the moment that Sir Ian McKellan has a minor break down when he’s basically acting opposite a green ball in a room of nothing but green blocks.
It’s not surprising that actors that have made their money, if they still want to act, go back to the stage.

I think we did get a bit too obsessed with every actor and actress being good looking. Some amazing actors and actresses were just above average or cute, and some just plain or even ugly, but were amazing actors who you cannot imagine a modern person in those roles. Kathy Bates in Misery comes to mind… I can’t think of a modern actress because the only people these days that get away looking that plain are comedic actors.
Can you imagine a world with no Robin Williams because some casting director said he was not “hot enough” or “too hairy”?
Makes you wonder how many amazing talents have been cast aside because of it.

Same. My son said it was bad & its what he does for a living.
He even says
"you've got to be careful or it'll look like slop & I never want to give someone a headache with my editing"
