I’d like to see a conclave-centered movie but set in the distant past. The papacy has a fascinating history and if a movie is set in the Middle Ages, it’ll have greater weight bc the papacy was actually a true political force then.

Or just do a movie set at the cadaver synod, when the new pope dug up the rotting corpse of the former pope and put it on trial.

i just found it implausible they would just vote for Benitez after barely knowing him and not even knowing he even existed,

Wouldn’t be the first “out there/not well known” cardinal to be elected Pope. The bomb blast in the Sistine Chapel probably rattled a bunch of the voters as well.

They clearly matched what the real look is

The Domus Sanctae Marthae’s interiors are much more muted in real life.

A completely unknown Cardinal in his lower 50s getting elected Pope after he gives a speech that lasted roughly the same amount of time as Linus explaining what Christmas is all about? Hell fricking no.
As the first Pope after St. Peter, Pope Linus was selected and not elected (there being no cardinals at that time). Appropriate that Linus was Charlie Brown's one true follower.

So well acted but the ending just fell flat.

Watched this alone when I had strep so uninterrupted.

Thought it was well done, captures the high drama and the low drama and the dirty shite all us humans carry around.

Remember Cardinals are rock stars, they get the VIP treatment wherever they go so I thought it did a good job showing what it may be like when they get locked down.

The twist at the end was unnecessary, the ultimate winner had a nice arc and didnt need that.

And then all of it culminate in some tranny bs was really disappointing.

Benitez wasn’t a tranny, he was intersex (born with both male and female sex organs). And his whole point in not having a procedure was that he believed he was to be as God made him (which was the ethical controversy the film was seeking to make; the church commonly demonizes sex changes as an affront to Gods creation so what about people who are born with hormonal imbalances, mixed genitalia, etc who choose to remain as they are)

The Benitez “twist” at the end was incredibly overblown.

Same here. I was streaming it at home and about 2/3 of the way through I told my wife, who didn't want to watch it, how good it was. '

After it was over I told her that I was embarrassed to tell her how it ended.

Same, I was totally let down by the end and can't imagine that Catholics (and maybe other devout Christians) were pleased with it.

How do people not know what trans is in 2025?

Benitez was not trans.

Agreed 100%. The end was a dumpster fire. I think they were trying to add 'shock value' against the Catholics. Overall, like yourself, I thought the first 90% of the movie was well done.

Thank you. Finally, an honest take. This film is sick and spreads false teachings

Funny that as soon as the Pope kicked the bucket, this movie started trending on Netflix.

Almost like papal vacancies are rare and people want to see how a conclave works.

I'll admit I just watched it because it started trending on Netflix. First 3/4 was good. The last was pure garbage.

Look there is so much political posturing behind the scenes in Conclave and I thought this movie did a good job depicting that. But like someone said, for the "new" unknown cardinal to get it after 1 speech, then injecting the tranny crap....just garbage! And who was voting for him initially? He himself said he was supporting the Dean. You would think a room of seasoned Cardinals would still be voting for the main guys, like the Italian or the Dean. It was like watching Clinton v. Bush and then Ross Perot wins after 1 speech?!?

Never get into the movie because there's nothing redeeming about it. The movie acts like the Vatican is just some very unsociable "social club" where Cardinals meet to discuss getting rid of 2,000 years of rules and theology, and discuss losing faith, etc. Its a garbled mess.

this 100%

the bombing was kind of far fetched but it is Hollywood
funny how immediately after the Muslim attack on the Holy See the conclave all of a sudden stood steadfast behind the anti-xenophobic cardinale. Never mind he also turned out to be a tranny

Hollywood liberals sure showed em, the papacy belongs to the woke! Ridiculous movie #TeamTedesco #MakeCatholicismGreatAgain

Really like the first 3/4ths but the ending was terrible. Had so much potential but the movie ended up being not equal to the sum of its parts.

I thought it was a poor remake of The Shoes of the Fisherman.

Watch the original version, it is light years ahead of the remake, and far better actors.

Anthony Quinn as Cardinal Kiril Pavlovich Lakota
Laurence Olivier as Piotr Ilyich Kamenev
Oskar Werner as Fr. David Telemond
David Janssen as George Faber
Vittorio De Sica as Cardinal Rinaldi
Leo McKern as Cardinal Leone
John Gielgud as The Elder Pope
Barbara Jefford as Dr. Ruth Faber
Rosemary Dexter as Chiara
Frank Finlay as Igor Bounin
Burt Kwouk as Chairman Peng
