Cleopatra (1963) was supposed to cost 2-4 million. Ended up costing 44 million

That is equivalent to about $450 million dollars today. Wow.

But it made almost 60 million, so it probably made a small profit.

Yes, and we still have not seen the whole movie, was 8 hours cut to 6 then cut again before being release.

Richard had a ton of screen time cut.

The scale and logistics of the film were almost unheard of at the time... as well as Taylor's illness and near death that kept delaying production - as well as her and Burton's tempestuous relationship. I'll do the work you should have done. An incredibly beautiful woman, with fire in her being to match it.

Cleopatra was an ok film, but Maggie the Cat and Leslie in Giant remain my favorites.

Funny timing for this topic. I am reading Alexandria- The City That Changed the World right now and just got through the end of the Ptolemy 300 year dynasty. It pretty much ended with the death of Cleopatra VI. The classic movie with Taylor playing the role has always even one of my favorites.

I'm very much into the Egyptian dynasties as well. Not to be a nitpicker, but she was actually Cleopatra the 7th (sorry to be a pedant:) Alexandria was a fascinating place at the time. I'm still hoping that they find her tomb as Kathleen Martinez is currently trying to do at Taposiris Magna. She's uncovered some incredible finds thus far. How was the book? Do you recommend it?

I have not watched this film in years. Went to check it out on Prime and it was the remastered HD version in 70mm- and it was on sale for 4.99 so ended up buying it. Will do a rewatch.

The picture on the posters was pretty awesome too.

Maggie the Cat (Cat on a Hot Tin Roof 1958) , Leslie (Giant 1956) and Velvet Brown (National Velvet 1944) are my favorite Liz Taylor movies. TCM shows all three a couple of time a year. I always try to catch them.

National Velvet maybe thought of as a kid's movie, but it's great because the rest of the cast are perfect throughout the movie. Both her parents, her brother, Mickey Rooney's character, even the townspeople are great.

It's the Guiness record for most costume changes in a movie too. She wore 65 unique outfits in that movie.

Another excellent movie Liz made was Suddenly, last summer. I love all of those movies you listed.

I meant to write VII. Great book if you haven’t read it already. I am in the 4th century now and the Christian theological foundations and philosophies that were started in Alexandria. When scripture was still written or spoken in Hebrew, Aramaic, and Koine Greek before being translated to Latin. The title of “Pope” originated in Alexandria also. I didn’t know that either. The book is so well written that it is hard to put down.

It really cost a WHOLE LOT more than that with all the changes to locations, writers, execs., casts, etc.

It didn’t make much money (if any at all) in the long run.
