I still say this all the time in lots of different scenarios. It's pretty much a cover all.

This. Clear memory in 2004 of a guy walking past me on the way to the doorman and said something that usually would be fighting words, but he said a clear CS reference in the Chapelle voice with a smile. Paused for a sec, realized he was being funny and I couldn't even be mad

Dave has said he just became overwhelmed. He asked CC is he could take a break before starting the 3rd season to gather himself and they said "No", so he walked away.

He also felt that the good nature of his earlier skits was beginning to be sacrificed and that people were no longer laughing with him as a black man but at him.

I love the story behind this skit.

In real life Prince loved this skit and thought it was hilarious.

Dave wanted the show to make a joke out of racism and stereotypes in order to foster an environment where the racism and anymosity of the past was replaced with humility and humor. However, towards the end he began to feel that rather than healing the racial divide through humor, his sketches were actually promoting stereotypes and racism. This cognitive dissidence combined with mounting pressure to meet impossible expectations, crazy work schedules, ect led him to finally snap and go to Africa.

He checked himself into almost a rehab facility. Think a cushy mental hospital for wealthy people who aren't violent, but need to get themselves away from their lives to get back to neutral with counseling and care.

fricking hilarious. Chappelle was a genius. In the height of the Wayne Brady as the funny black guy with Drew Carey on his very 'white' show, he pulls out this shite.

That look on Dave's face when he says that.

Four pages and no mention of the shite in?
I use the phrase mudbutt just because of Chappelle

There's only 1 skit I ever found to be not funny, and that's thanks to John Mayer.

Lol wut. That one was great.

When John Mayer is in the barber shop and the guy goes "hey yo.. Shut the frick up."

Then they go to the restaurant full of white people and Chappelle goes "lot of Bush votes in the room." Lol. I still use "lot of (most recent Republican nominee) votes in the room" when I'm in a situation that applies.

The third "season" was awful, and you could tell something was wrong with him. The writing took a huge dive.

I was waiting for Wayne Brady to make an appearance. "Dave you smoking PCP."

Ashy Larry was one of my favorites.

All the racial stuff played a role but Comedy Central was essentially hitching their wagon to Dave chappelle. He felt like the success of the whole network hinged on him being incredibly funny week in and week out and he couldn't handle it.

Best quote from the show.

Some of my favorite quotes from the show:

quote:

Audience Member: Negrodamus, will Arsenio Hall ever have a show again?
Negrodamus: Yes. Arsenio Hall will have a new show called "Good Morning, Black America". It will be played at noon throughout the country.

Silky Johnston: I'm very upset about what you said about my coat. I made it outta your mother's pubic hair

Silky Johnston: Now, if you'll excuse me. I'm gonna go put water in yo mama's water dish.

It's crazy to think that he bought a farm in Yellow Springs, Ohio. First time one of my friends saw him in a coffee shop we tore the Internet apart trying to find tickets bc we thought he was in town for a show.
