Can we talk about Pam from The Office for a minute?

Watching reruns (all the damn time ) reminded me of something. There are a lot of things that piss people off about Pam, and some rightfully so. But I want to talk about two things specifically...

- On Michael's last day (his real last day, when he was set to leave the day before everyone thought he was leaving), Pam supposedly went to price copiers (or something like that?).

But then, once Jim realized what Michael was doing, kept trying to get ahold of Pam on the phone, but couldn't. And at one point, we see her walk into a fricking movie (The King's Speech, I believe). What the hell is she thinking going to a fricking movie in the middle of a workday? How the hell would she possibly think that was a good idea or that it was something okay to do during work hours. I know people are sort of free to come and go from their office, but to go see a movie...especially under the guise of being out running errands or doing something for the office (like pricing copiers)????

That has ALWAYS bugged me. And on top of that, she had to know that her husband was trying to get in touch with her over the course of several hours, but she never called him back to see what the deal was..? That seems terrible IMO.

And then, once she gets to the airport, are we to assume that she bought a ticket? How else, in this post-9-11 country, would she have been able to get past security? And I believe she had her shoes off, so she definitely went through security to see him. Did she waste money on a fricking plane ticket?

- I'll be the first to admit that Jim handled the whole Philly job thing fairly poorly. I know there were reasons that he did it (due to Pam), but all in all he could've handled that a lot better than he did. I will also admit, though, that Jim was always the biggest supporter of Pam and her art pursuances. When she went to NYC, he was nothing but supportive (even if a little intimidated at times).

But one thing I noticed in watching the Job Fair episode (where Michael, Pam, Oscar, and Darryl go back to Pam's high school), when she is talking to the guy at the end in the art booth...he tells her that the best places to get educated in art and artistic programs are big-city-type places like New York or Philadelphia.

So in reality, wouldn't Jim's whole Philly thing actually be another boost toward her art "career" if she wanted it to be? We never see (onscreen at least) her tell JIm anything about Philly for art school, only NYC that I can remember. But why wouldn't she ever consider that once the whole Athlead thing took off and moving to Philly was actually a possibility? She sure as hell could've tried to make the most of it instead of, I don't know, running into the arms of another man (and literally going to his house unbeknownst to her husband).

Anyway, just a couple of things I've noticed during some recent rewatches. Also, as a thanks for your time, here is a video I found of about one second from every episode of The Office. It's pretty good/cool: Did I stutter?

-I took the movie theater thing as representation that Pam has no purpose at the office anymore, she knows it, and so she just doesn't give a frick anymore. I assume that this wasn't the first time she's done it. The weird part is that, if she really does care for Michael that much, you would think she wouldn't pick his "next to last day" in the office to play hooky. It seems like she would do it after he has already left.

-The "Goodby Michael" episode was great because for once, Michael didn't try to make it all about himself. Normally he would have helped plan his own going away party or something. Instead, he tried to keep it lowkey. Also, he seemed very much interested in Phyllis' gift that she was knitting for him. In the first Christmas episode, he was disgusted by it. Good to see some character growth and maturity from him.

-I always thought she had her shoes off so she could run and catch up to him. Regardless, she was definitely past security because the little interview segment with her was by the windows at one of the gates. Maybe it's because the Scranton airport is tiny and easier to talk your way through security?

-Jim should have gone straight to Philly and not tried this half assed approach. Your observation about the art school opportunity was spot on too.

Ive watched everything up until Michael leaves two or three times and a random episode every now and again. Right now is the first time im watching post Michael. Not so bad, not the same, but not too bad. Kevins character has gotten surprising good.

It only bothered me bc I knew what Michael was doing. It come on Pam Jesus he's freaking leaving. Her going to the movie wasnt really a big deal to me for one, she was sales person so it was hurting her financially not being there, so that was just a bad choice on her part. And two, bc I just imagine a number of people in the office doing the same thing. If it would have been any other episode I dont think it would have been that annoying.

Yea getting through airport security was kind of stupid. But it was a way to keep the cameras from getting through so they could have a moment by themselves. So from a story standpoint it wasnt so bad, not realistic, but in a way it was nicely done.

I get choked up with stuff every now and then, but man that scene and when him and Jim are talking in the office... "best boss I ever had" I not gonna lie, I was tearing up bad.

this just shows how much he just is genuinely a good guy. there are moments throughout the show were he showed how he cares for pretty much everybody in there, except for one obviously.

like erin for example, he was pretty harsh on her for a while. but then he learns that she basically didnt have a father and it made him think, he hugs her and comforts her and from then on he was nice to her.

god he is such an awesome character

I think Pam gets too much hate honestly. In the list of most annoying wives/girlfriends in sitcom history she’s near the bottom for me.

She had already given herself the job title "office administrator" or "office manager" (can't remember the exactly title) by this point. She tricked Gabe into a certain salary I think, so her leaving in the middle of the day wouldn't affect her pay. Like I mentioned, I think this scene was a good example of how worthless her made up job title really was, and this was proven when she tried to apply for a similar job title with Saul Goodman. It turned out to be a glorified receptionist position.

Always bugs me in the episode when Jim and Pam have been fighting and are going to counseling, etc that when Jim comes back to the office to hug Pam in the parking lot because he’s hurting and loves her, it takes her a good ten seconds to actually hug him back. Like the guy is clearly broken and so is she and while he is making and effort to show her physical affection, she just stands there like it’s the first time she has ever been hugged in her life.

Maybe it’s because Mrs Durden and I are fairly quick to apologize after a fight or disagreement but that scene always aggravated me. Even if you still have doubts, your reaction to your spouse hugging you in a moment of humility and pain should be to comfort them no matter how mad you are (DV and disputes other than differences over career pursuits notwithstanding). I’d have been just as pissed at Jim had he done the same thing.

much of that season was about Michael moving on.....parting ways with Packer, accepting Threat Level Midnight was awful, etc.

that and the episode before when they sing for michael, cut to him, and he says "well this is going to hurt like a mother fricker"

also I really hated Ferrell being around for those episodes, kind of took the focus off Carrell

Russillo Destroys Pam on Get Up

Russillo has been blasting Pam recently on twitter, and then went through it with Rainn Wilson on Get Up. Was pretty funny.

agreed. should have had the training day as an episode, and then had him leave for the last couple of Michael episodes. It could have been as easy as him going back home to get ready for his move to Scranton or whatever. No need to have him present on set for those final Michael moments.

Pam's art sucked.

They say people paint their lives.

Look at Pam's life.
