Book of Eli Debate [SPOILER]

One of the debates I've come across online was whether or not Eli was totally blind throughout the duration of the film.
1. A few times, he noticeably bumps into things.
2. He needlessly runs his hand along the faucet head in the house.
3. He noisily searches for things with his hands.
4. He doesn't shoot at someone unless they fire first.
5. He doesn't realize what brand the tape deck is even though the owner can see the brand name.
6. He feels for a flame when he lights the lighter.
7. He shoots an arrow when the cat growls.
But if that's the case, how does that explain how he knows how to hide from the bikers on the overpass? Or that a house is in the distance? The only reasoning I can give for the knife fights is that it's divine intervention. Either way, it's great marketing by the producers (a la TimeCrimes or Fight Club) to encourage moviegoers to watch it a second time.
Thoughts?

I agree, there has to be some divine intervention to describe some of his actions.

You forgot the comment he made to the homeowner about not seeing the sign after walking by it. During the movie I assume him to be lying.
I was wondering the same question though...probably going to reserve any kind of guessing till I can see it again now that I know he is blind

I thought he was lying about the sign as well.
I'm curious as to how he knew which shop was the trader's. I just now realized that when he gives the gun back to the shop owner, he asks him to take his finger off of the trigger, even though the guy already did.

In the fight scenes it's hard to believe he could do all that based on hearing. My grandfather was blind so I know a little about the enhanced senses.

I assumed (blind or otherwise) that God was protecting him until his journey was over. Before the house shootout, he tells Solara that they'll make it out alive.
When Redridge misses his first shot in the street and looks surprised, that's when I considered that it was divine intervention.

Well maybe its like this,
The world was incredibly quiet because of the fact barely anyone was around after the war, allowing his hearing to increase or the fact that God was protecting him, Remember when Eli said, " Someone came to me and said that if I took this book to the west with me, I would be fine or he said that ever since he had the book he had been protected", maybe it was divine intervention.

That was pretty much the idea.

Wasn't even a thought during the movie, but you make legitimate points on all issues.

A few are points I noticed other people bringing up, and other points are some of my own realizations once I recognized the trend.
There were hints, but I definitely didn't catch the twist while watching the film.

Also - the increased sense of smell...like his ability to smell the salt of the ocean from miles away.

Thought of one. He was wearing a Kmart nametag. It can be assumed he worked at Kmart before the wars. Alot of times kmart hires disabled people for some of the easier jobs to help out the community.

He knows he is backing up under the bridge when he fights the highjackers because he is stepping out of the sun light. Even I can tell when the suns rays are on me...

Limits their vision and gives him a distinct advantage due to the better development of his other senses. The divine protection thing doesn't hurt either.

8. Mila Kunis offering herself to him didn't seem to phase him at all.

Pretty sure even a blind man could tell she's hot

Saw the movie tonight and thought it was pretty good. I stayed away from this thread before seeing the movie because I didn't want it spoiled.
But...I saw it with another poster who did read this thread, and about 10 minutes in the movie he said, "You know, I think he's blind."
I guess he forgot he told me that he already read this thread.
On the way home he said he was sorry, he just thought he would sound cool if it looked like he figured it out.
What do you think, was it a douche move or not? And how should I get him back?
