Had my second viewing last night.
Through out the entire movie, he would make a clicking sound with his tongue. I only noticed this in my second viewing.
I think he did this so he could hear sound bouncing off of objects and he could map out a picture of his surrounds.

Why else would they introduce his heightened senses, him reading in brail, and the entire back story of EVERYONE going blind that was above ground at the time the nukes went off.
I don't think the question is "was he blind" as much as it is "did divine intervention allow him to see when necessary".
While watching the movie the first time, your thought process should have been something like this:
this guy is blind.
then:oh wait, no way a blind guy could pull that shite off.
then: wait, he's blind
then: no way he's blind
Only if you figured out the divine intervention part early would you be able to make perfect sense of what was going on. Right? Am I misremembering it?

Honestly, I noted his clamoring around a bit or other odd gestures, but did not relate it because of the other shite he was capable of.
I'd be surprised at anyone truly spotting that the first time because it was so subtle. But, you know, people gotta front (90's term for posturing).

When he shoots that crow for dinner he tells Mila to be quiet 2 or 3 times then suddenly shoots his arrow up in the air, never really looks to see the bird just listens then bam.

i think that it is a mixture of his other senses are better and divine intervention

at points in the movie, his eyes look glazed over, like he has cataracts almost.
i didnt think even think he was blind until the end with teh bible, but a few times in the movie his eyes caught my attention.
it seemed that they changed from the beginning towards the end.
the part in the tower thing when Mila Kunis tries to get his bible from his bag as he sleeps......., when he awakens, look at his eyes. they look funny as hell.

Two things I thought interesting - one was at the first of the show when he was walking down the highway - he knew when he walked past the car -
and I thought a better touch at the end would have been for the lady to take a bible with her.

Also, when he was fighting, some of his postures were kinda weird...

I watched it closely last night on Blue Ray. If you will notice he walked almost past the car and it was like he noticed the smell of the body inside.
BTW after re-watching the entire thing last night I believe he was blind from the start. The movie was made however to seem to leave some doubt on this with different scenes. Almost like the producers wanted to stir debate. I noticed though that in no scene he would have had to be able to see.

Also before the gunfight sequence when oldman was out there with 10 guys I thought he was just being a badass when he told him he couldn't have the bible.

But if that's the case, how does that explain how he knows how to hide from the bikers on the overpass? Or that a house is in the distance?
It's pretty easy to feel shade in the desert. The house is a much bigger stretch. Maybe he heard the wind hitting the wind chimes or brushing stuff against the house.

But I don't think he was completely blind. At one point he's walking on an overpass and stops at the edge where the overpass was destroyed.
Also he knows he's about to get ambushed because he can smell their stench. If it was divine intervention, I think he would have went another route or would of "just known" what was about to happen. After he kills them he lifts the lighter from one of em and lights it. He doesn't put his hand over it, he just looks at it.
Also that cat doesn't make a sound in the woods. Denzel makes that clicking noise after he pulls the arrow back to get the cat's attention IMO. Then he walks straight up to the cat and picks it up.
Also, in that cabin, he doesn't feel around for the faucet. He grabs the end of it and pulls it to the side to get his canteen under it and then reaches for the knob to turn it on.
Someone made the comment that he told the trader to take his finger off the trigger when it was already off. After rewatching it, I didn't see anything showing his finger was already off the trigger.
Just my 2 cents.
One thing I didn't figure is why ppl he came across wanted to see his hands, and he stated that "I'm not one of them". My question is who is "them"? Did I miss something?
ETA: that was "The Road" where he stopped at the edge of the over pass. My bad.

I think they wanted to see if he was a cannibal. Cannibal's hands shake after eating humans for so long. (as stated in the movie)

Gotcha. Is that accurate or just part of the movie?

I watched this last night for the time. I will admit that I didn't figure out he was blind until it was spelled out for me at the end. I thought he was somehow a badass and also clumsy! After watching the first 30 minutes again this AM it is obviously he was blind throughout the movie. There are moments that his eyes are moving more than that of the few blind people I know and have been around.
Solid flick!

so i am rewatching this right now, and its at the part where he is in the room with Mila for the first time.. this dude is most certainly not blind, at least at this point..
he looks everyone directly in their eyes.. moves things right to the edge of the table, clears a spot for her.. never miss grabs anything..
anyway, i had wondered about it since i read this thread before.. those people who said it was obvious and they noticed in the first 5 minutes are crazy, or lying..

I love this movie and have watched it twice. And I will admit that it never dawned on me to think he was blind until I read this thread just now. All of the things, pro and con him being blind are there to see now that I've had my duh moment. So, I am off to watch it again on demand. If Eli is completely blind, then his other senses are at super power level.
