I think it is definitive that he was blind based on an interview with Denzel Washington and the fact that he did echo location at least once in the movie.

Q: I wanted to ask you a little bit more about (Eli)'s past considering that the apocalypse basically happened when he was in his teens. What exactly has he been up to in that time and also how long has he been in possession of the book?
Denzel Washington: You know, there was a kid during the research that I ran across online by the name of (Ben Underwood). I don't know if you've heard about this kid and in fact he just passed away and he was - he had no eyes but he developed this sort of sonic, you know, clicking sound and he's phenomenal.
If you go online, YouTube (Ben Underwood) and there's some great specials about him and what he's able to do. He skateboards, he plays basketball. He does everything or he did as he's passed away now.

i remember seeing that also.. still, he just dressed his own wound in a moving vehicle..
ill say this.. if they intended for his character to be blind, then they went to great lengths, and took A LOT of liberties to make it seem like he wasnt.. and if thats the case, then the movie takes a hit, imo..

Also, I got a question regarding his dictation of the Bible...how the he'll could that guy remember the whole thing. There is no way that is even possible.
I tool it as a play on the "oral tradition" of the bible, that they called it The Book of Eli because it's been a common theme with scholars that it's changed over time, specifically when they point out inconsistencies in text. Thats the part that intrigued me the most.

Okay, just watched it for the third time with the idea that he is blind. He is...from the beginning.
The first two times, I had no idea he was blind and I filled in the blanks with answers of my own. I decided that pre-war, he was some kind of teacher or minister that worked with the blind. That's how he learn braille. Course I was wrong.
As for the house in the distance, now it is obvious that Solara saw the house and spoke about it. When she asked if he thought anyone lived there, he said he 'had no idea'...because he couldn't see it.
As for how he did all the arse-kicking, I'll go with God's protection and 30 years experience. The man was terribly scarred up.
Another proof is at the end by Gary Oldman's character's reaction when he realized Eli was blind.
By the way, thanks for this thread. The Book of Eli went from one of my favs to near the top of the list.

well, like i said before, if the intent is for his character to be blind, then they took so many liberties that it makes it less of a movie.. and thats not even counting the fight scenes..
ill continue to believe he is not blind, or at least not the entire time, and that it is still a great movie..

I am going to blow yalls mind. He's not blind at all.
He just knows how to read braille.
It's the ultimate double twist.

In the scene where he sits down to dictate the bible to (the guy from clockwork orange) he takes off his glasses and you can see he has a blind mans eyes.

If you're going to make a movie about a blind guy who can shoot a passing bird with a bow and arrow, you might as well exaggerate some other stuff too
Best interpretation of the bible in a movie is by Doyle in Sling Blade:
quote:
Well I can't understand none of it. This one begat that one and that one begat this one, and begat and begat. And then lo and behold someone said some shite to someone or another
