You seriously didn't get he was blind?

Even with the Bible being in braille?

Is this really a debated topic? Of course he was blind the entire movie. That was the point of the whole twist. Do some people say he was blinded at the end after he was shot or something? What is the debate?

Honestly I didn't make the connection & I'm usually really good about picking up on stuff like that. Maybe it's b/c the movie was just ok for me so I wasn't paying as much attention to it. It really sucks b/c now it seems like it would've been a much more clever movie that I would've enjoyed more.

Some people know sign language & aren't deaf...just figured he knew how to read braille.

That's why it was genius. You didn't really like it, but now I bet you'll see it again.

Its not "of course" anything. Its pretty fricking obvious that he wasn't blind, but his long journey in the open and his personal history was making him GO blind. He had to get the book where it needed to go before he went totally blind. That's his quest.

He made it.. just barely.

I think you are way wrong, but I guess that answers my question of whether this is a truly debated topic. I thought and still think that he was blind throughout.

You do realize that Bruce Willis was dead in the Sixth Sense, right?

You may have noticed that there are differing opinions in this thread. Not to mention hundreds of other threads on the web.

So yes, that makes it a debated topic.

It was divine intervention.

IMO, it was clear they intended to show he was blind and could "see by faith".

ts pretty obvious that he wasn't blind,

I disagree. It was obvious he was blind from the get go if you re-watch it. The movie was an allegory. The "blind could see" by faith and God's intervention. Why else would they introduce his heightened senses, him reading in brail, and the entire back story of EVERYONE going blind that was above ground at the time the nukes went off.

I just now realized that when he gives the gun back to the shop owner, he asks him to take his finger off of the trigger, even though the guy already did.
No, he didn't. His finger was still on the trigger.

Interesting, checking now...

One of the debates I've come across online was whether or not Eli was totally blind throughout the duration of the film.

1. A few times, he noticeably bumps into things.

2. He needlessly runs his hand along the faucet head in the house.

3. He noisily searches for things with his hands.

4. He doesn't shoot at someone unless they fire first.

5. He doesn't realize what brand the tape deck is even though the owner can see the brand name.

6. He feels for a flame when he lights the lighter.

7. He shoots an arrow when the cat growls.

8. THE BIBLE WAS IN BRAILLE.

I had no idea. The "clues" make sense, but there are so many other instances where you'd think a blind person would have much more trouble.

In the bar, he identifies the group of marauders...how could a blind man have known it was the same guys?

Compelling theory...

The larger picture is more interesting maybe.

I feel a hint of Hollywood's new-age spirituality in the film - his spirituality gives him the super-sensory abilities - not Christianity. Organized religion takes a shot. The film is about controlling people with religion, no?

I thought most of the people trying to shoot him were blind, fwiw. Shows how much I know.

Quite possibly. Or at least the parallels of religion, salvation vs. corruption.

The blind issue, I don't know. There are certainly clear suggestions that he is, but other things that would seem to suggest not. In the shootout in town, he nails many targets that don't appear to have made any sound beforehand, and he knew the marauders in the bar were same ones from before.

Seems like divine intervention was certainly a part of the basis for what he was able to do.

I think the shelving of the bible at the end was framing it more of a general "God" movie, rather than a Christian one, although it was just a blip at the very end...
