Also, I still contend HBO missed the boat on a spin off with the actors cast to play Luciano, Capone, Lansky, Rothstein, Lansky, etc. They were insanely well casted.

Thinking about starting this show

I think I tried years ago and never got far.

But OP's list makes me think I need to re-try. Sopranos is my #1 though. The depth of character in that show still blows me away.

I'm also a mafia movie/show sucker. Casino is one of my favorite movies on the planet.

The fact that a main character bites the dust early still blows my mind

This ruined it for me. I love Buscemi but he's a guy not the guy

The last couple seasons were pretty poor though

Yeah, the last two seasons were very weak and kept it from being elite, or even a show I recommend to people.

First two seasons were outstanding though, with the third being very good. By the end Harrow, Rothstein, and Capone were the only interesting parts.

I love that shows like Breaking Bad, The Wire, Sopranos and Boardwalk Empire could have an extremely healthy debate on Top 50 moments and still leave off some people's favorite moments.

Here's one of my favorite scenes from Boardwalk Empire featuring Nucky, Rothstein, and Johny Torrio - showcases the thoughtfulness of the dialog and the casting:

You Do Nothing...

I have always felt like Carnivale had the ingredients to be special like those you listed but it got cut too short.

Started it the other day and on episode 6. Very entertaining so far but not to that Deadwood level as of yet.

HBO rushed its close to launch Vinyl, which promptly failed after like two seasons.

Ugh really? Vinyl was only one season lol coulda been a great series. But yeh BE is amazing, but its not quite Sopranos level imo. I wish Jimmy Darmondy would have to bee killed, but I always read the actor was a real pile and hard to deal with and he's def an odd duck if you watch interviews with him.

ETA: I rest my case lol, came across this when looking for BE scenes the other day on YT Michael Pitt (Jimmy)'s music video thing

First 3 seasons of Boardwalk Empire are some of the best TV ever produced.

Acting and Production Design are almost unparalleled IMO.

Best depth of supporting characters and guest stars of maybe any show ever. You went into every week hoping to see a half dozen players that may only be there 1-2 episodes a season.

They never knew what to do with Margaret and that hamstrung the show greatly in the second half, and it also suffered from Sopranos-itis: If you're a second-rate gangster, the emergence of legit big players makes your failure inevitable.

great point. i think thats one of the things that made it so good in the early going is seeing real life characters like luciano, rothstein, joe the boss, but only in short spurts.

Really enjoyed it. It kind of lagged at the end

I don't think the writers intended to make that big jump to the depression era for the final season, but when that was pegged as the final season they didn't have much choice.

Still a fantastic series. Cannavale stole the spotlight in every scene he was in and Rothstein was a god amongst men.

True that. Best versions of these characters yet, and def the best Capone characterization thus far imo especially.

Chalky White- "I aint buildin' no bookcase."

Eli Thompson- "Tell me, Mickey, how the frick are you not dead yet?"

Many more great lines that I can't remember. So many great characters played by wonderful actors. I loved this show.

And then they shite on their audience with a truncated final season.

If you're having a tough time deciding between this show and one of the others, flip a coin. While it's in the air, you'll know which side you're rooting for.

you forgot "I think you'd agree Greektown belongs to us now"

The only redeeming parts of the final season was seeing the castellammarese wars and Al Capone's story line. "on my desk, next to the elephants, al's desk next to the elephants, desk elephants," I will admit watching Dr. Narcisse's hit was satisfying.

They blew it by ignoring Rothstein's murder. It was a very high profile case at the time.

Carnivale being canceled after two seasons still pisses me off. It was canceled for Rome's massive budget...which ends up getting canceled after two seasons.

I love history and the Roman Empire is particularly interesting. But I still haven't watched a second of Rome and never will. I know, "my loss".

I'd still like to know what Daniel Knauf had planned for seasons 3-6 of Carnivale.

In fact, I never finished it, so I can't really judge on how they "stuck the landing."

I really liked the show, but for some reason I didn’t watch the last 2 seasons. I have hbo max so maybe I’ll pick up where I left off.
