Better film: The Shining or Silence of the lambs?

In your personal opinion, which do you feel is the better out of the two and why? (Oscar stuff aside)
And was Nicholson better than Hopkins?

I don't know who was better but Jack put in way more work.
And all that work and no play made Jack a dull boy.
Hopkins screen time in the entire movie is just 16 minutes.
Jack is basically the Shining; Hopkins has Clarece's arc and of course, Buffalo Bill. Hopkins is like Darth Vader...a small but captivating part of the film.
Technically, The Shining feels superior - but I also love Kubrick.
On the other hand, I've rewatched Silence way more than The Shining - Silence is like the horror/thriller version of Shawshank - it's immensely rewatchable.
IDK

Silence of the Lambs had a much tighter story, excellent pacing, and the acting was top notch.
The Shining is two and a half hours of Jack sighing, twitching, and stalking while Shelley Duvall cries or screams in the background. If you aren't watching Jack be Jack or looking for fun production design touches, it doesn't hold up well on rewatch IMO. Probably makes a better first impression though, the hotel is just such a badass setting for a horror movie.

Silence is much more enjoyable and rewatchable.

Silence is damn near a perfect film

The Shining because Kubrick and Nicholson...
Jack's Dull boy scene is one of my favorite moments in film.
"When do you think maybe he should be taken to a doctor?"
"As soon as possible"
"And that I have signed a letter of agreement, A CONTRACT"
"Wendy? Darling? Light, of my life"

Silence of the Lambs is the better film. I love The Shining, but I can't understand why they couldn't find someone other than Shelley Duvall for Jack's wife. She was awful. Then again, maybe that was the point.

I thought she played the role well..but I do think a lot of that had to do with Kubrick. He may well have seen someone he thought he could easily manipulate and emotionally abuse to the edge of her sanity so he could get the performance he wanted from her.

Or maybe Kubrick wanted the audience to dislike her in an attempt to place the audience in Jack's shoes to a degree.

Can't go wrong with either film, but I would go with The Shining. It has a lot more layers to it, where Silence is more of a straight forward what you see is what you get kind of movie.
For me trying to decipher what Kubrick is trying to say just makes it endlessly rewatchable.
Both are great movies though.

What was there to dislike about her? Beyond her inability to see that Jack was sick which we realize from the beginning when she tries to justify to the doctor that she shouldn't have left Jack.

For some reason Silence never grabbed me. I never for one second believed Jody Foster was a real agent on an actual investigation. I've always thought Hopkins' performance was an entry in the overacting Hall of Fame. I just remember that I had many eyeroll "Yeah, right" moments while watching it. But I've only watched it once, so maybe should give it another chance.
The Shining by a ton for me.

I probably like The Shining a tiny bit more than Silence of the Lambs, but I would say that the better overall film though is definitely Silence of the Lambs.
