I watched that movie while my wife (no pics) studied at a nearby table. On the boat ride out to the island opening scene, she called the premise of the movie only hearing the dialogue. I’m sure others also figured it out easily too.
I think the real problem with "Shutter Island" is that it's very obvious early on that it has a twist, so you have two hours to figure out what that twist is. One of the reasons "Sixth Sense" worked so well is that you can go through the whole movie cold, assuming that the kid seeing ghosts is the main plot. It's a perfectly good plot by itself even without a twist. Also didn't hurt that Shywhatchamacallit wasn't yet famous for his twists. Once "Sixth Sense" came out, he lost that advantage.

I always thought Law Abiding Citizen was kind of silly. Why wouldn't they have posted someone by his cell 24/7 to stand watch over him if they knew he was the one causing all the murders somehow? Also the ending was way too far fetched because there is no way in hell they would allow a bomb to go off in the prison.

How do you not include planet of the apes?
Another clue in Sixth Sense. Bruce wore the same clothes the whole time. I wondered why that was during the movie but didn't figure it out.

Remember. It’s a really good movie about two Jews seeking revenge against a Nazi prison guard that murdered their families. Crazy plot twist at the end.

No. You knew he was going to get out of jail and that the warden would of pay for his crimes. Not a twist really at all.
How would you know that? It wasn’t promoted as a prison escape movie.

I never understood how this was a twist. It was pretty obvious she was not a normal chick.
I knew the “twist” ahead of time. My wife didn’t. After the movie she asked why everyone said there was a shocking reveal. After I explained, she said, “We weren’t supposed to notice that was a guy the entire time?”

The movie literally has the word "redemption" in it.
For such a good movie it sure had a shitty title.

Right. My only guess is that back when this movie came out, trannies weren’t such a trendy thing and people weren’t used to seeing them at all, much less on tv.
Still, this
is a dude.

Redemption doesn’t equal escape. The Longest Yard was a prison film about redemption. No escape.

All the obvious ones have been listed so I'll throw one out that I hadn't thought about in a long time. It's an early 90's Tom Berrenger movie called Shattered. I wasn't the seasoned movie watcher at the time as I am now but I remember the twist being pretty good.
Apparently I need to see No Way Out can't believe I've never seen it. What's the plot without ruining the twist?
Number one for me Is Sixth Sense, I saw it cold and was thoroughly shocked at the ending.
Number two is Frailty. Such an underrated movie.

Because I think people understand narrative structure. The twist would have been if he didn't get out of prison. Who gives a shite about how it was promoted? The Blade Runner 2049 promotions completely misdirected the audience to what the plot was. In a bad way so did "Age of Ultron" and "Iron Man 3".

Interesting. Not sure how I missed this one. Will check it out, thanks for the rec
Yeah the obvious answer here is Sixth Sense. M Nights subsequent career makes it easy to forget just how incredible the film was, with an absolutely mind blowing twist.
It remains the GOAT twist. Anyone claiming to have known is either full of shite or knew going in there was a twist and was trying to figure something out.
I’m surprised no one has mentioned Psycho. Before Sixth Sense that was the standard bearer along with Planet of the Apes as top two.
I’ve always been a big fan of whodunnits, and while those reveals don’t always qualify as “twists”, I think the 74 Murder on the Orient Express qualifies and is a great one (haven’t seen the recent Brannaugh remake).
Of course it wasn’t cold for many who read the book first, but no matter which medium you encountered it first, it’s a very good twist imo.

If you haven't ever seen the movie Spellbinder with Kelly Preston, do yourself a favor and watch it. Vastly underrated, with a legit twist.

Kevin Costner plays a Navy Intel looking for a combination of Russian Spy and who murdered a woman. It is from the 80's and is definitely Cold War meets murder mystery. Really good flix.

A couple people have mentioned Frailty, that was a great one.
Haven't seen Arlington Road mentioned yet, I thought it was pretty good.
